Other Fully Parametric *Single* Rack Space Preamps???

hey all,

so i've been really digging my demeter hbp-1 preamp these days. i love the dual full-on parametric EQ section, and the fact that its all squashed into a single rack space.

i also have a Summit TD100 + FeQ setup that also fits in a single rack space, but found its parametric section is a little too subtle for live bass use, and best for its build-sake. i remember the presonus channel strip being the same. the cut/boost pots on the demeter, however, are much more effective.

but was wondering if there are any others i should know of? cause, anticipatory GAS is a painful thing. :D

Hey Man

Don't know if you're interested in this one or not, but the ISP Technologies Beta Bass is almost fully parametric. The band width controls are push button for wide & narrow rather than sweepable.

BTW, I have no experience with this in a live situation, but it sounds quite good--and versatile--in my home.

Furman PQ-3 would fit the bill, although I think they're out of production now. I used one for many years. 3-band fully parametric EQ with an instrument-level input. Worth considering if you can find one.

More recently I tried a Presonus Eureaka and had the results you described with the limited cut/boost range on the EQ. The Furman did not have this problem.

The item I would have recommended, the TC Electronics 1140, is out of production. I also would have recommended the Rane 5-band parametric, but I just went to the Rane website and didn't see it so maybe that one's out of production too.

Jeez, is the parametric becoming extinct? I love 'em.

That reminds me, I need to put the HPB-1J on my wish list.

+1 on the PQ-3. I have used them for a very long time. I would suggest replacing the stock TL072 opamps with LM833 opamps to get the maximum performance out of it. They just plug in so this is a very easy mod to do.

Which is the stereo switchable version of that puppy. Most powerful EQ I have ever experienced - incredible sweep of bandwidth, from 2 octaves down to 1/10 of an octave (equivalent to a 100 band graphic, if such a thing existed); 4 bands covering 20-20K with brilliant seemless overlapping; plus or minus 20 dB of tone shaping (never seen that anywhere); gain, output and balance controls, silent switching, very quiet, balanced and unbalanced ins and outs, full hardwire bypass, footswitchable, so absolutely brilliant for live rigs, and basically inert and transparent sonically, so really a toneshaping monster. Originally over $2,000.00, I got mine for $350.00.

They are cool.

Cheers,
Cameron

That was a classic, and had PLENTY of boost and cut:eek: Many of us old timers used the PQ-3 in combination with the Alembic pre as an early hi fi rig. IMO, since all these great bass heads have come out, I don't really see the advantage of these sort of modular systems for bass, but obviously some do.

Rane makes a very nice one space full parametric with hi pass filter, although it's more of an EQ than a full pre. It will drive a power amp though.

Analog ones are not in much demand in the pro sound world these days, IME. Rane and Ashly have both bailed from that market sector and moved to digital solutions

My Rane RPM digital unit will happily do up to 150 bands of fully parametric EQ in a single rack space, plus dozens of other stunts that would require a rack full of analog pieces and a patch bay, at the least. I did a post a while back about using the RPM for EFX mixing, EQ, and time alignment to the PA, all at the same time. I don't have any gigs where I need to do this at the moment, but I'm good to go if that ever happens.

When I sold off my Ashlys I replaced 'em with an Orban 642B. That works great as a bass preamp, but it's two rack spaces. It can run as a stereo 4 bander or mono 8 bander, which is kinda cool.

PW, could you like to that post? I have circled the Rane RPM page and revisited it a few times in the past but I'm not sure where to begin with the Dragnet platform or if/how it can be integrated with MIDI or...?

Here's the thread: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=360225

Feel free to PM me with further questions, or post 'em in that thread if you like. Since you don't live all that far from me, you're welcome to come out here and play with the Rane unit yourself sometime if you like.
