Ouch this hurts!!!

A part of me wants to be hard on the kid until I remember some of the things I did at that age. Like removing the frets from an Ibanez Roadstar to make a fretless and then spray painting the lovely wood grain of the body bright yellow.

So I better keep quiet.

It was my nephews B-day 3 weeks ago. HE turned 16 and has been playing in a death metal band. im a classic rock country player myself but for what it is there good. He has been playin out of my peavey tnt combo and a decent ibanez sound gear bass I gave him. well fo his bday I bassically cleaned my closet and gave him my peavey mega bass head and a korg tuner i had laying around so I mounted it all in a carvin molded rack i had. didnt have a cabinet that i dont use so I picked him up a well used and beat to death ampeg 410 although beat to death still sounds great ( typical ampeg tolex rash) and has lots of life. so now he has a very desent rig. I thought he would be happy?? well he called me today and said "uncle i jost got back from the music store i traded that old ampeg cab and peavey head for a crate 410 and a crate head" I said " whaaaaaaaat". He said "yea i got a good deal i traded that stuff so now me and and the whole band use crate." I said "bro you got a lot to learn you idot that ampeg cab is worth 300-350 used and the rack was 60 used, peavey head 250 used, and the korg tuner 150 used. and you traded it all for some new crate crap wich is 100 used all day long." so I went to his practice tonight to check it out and that crate rig he has sounds like poop only 200 watts at 4 ohms and the cab is only 8 ohms so he is only pushin 120 watts!!! I told him your gonna regret this when you get some decent gigs. thats when you realize new is not always better than old!! what do you guys think???

I don't think he's old enough to legally trade gear. I'd march him down there and undo this.

Aw man, I'm very sorry to hear that.
I gave my son, 15,(who lives out of state with his mother) a Fender MIM P bass and told him he better never even think about selling it. If he wants something else to save his own money and give me my P back:smug:
That hurts. He's where I used to be, when I thought Peavey was the be all, end all (to be clear, I dig Peavey). He's wanting a head and cab setup and was contemplating giving him my GK 700rbII, but lately I've been thinking that a used Peavey is where it's at for him. Not to mention, I love my GK;)

haha i feel sorry for you, he'll learn eventually. I bet his bands terrible a death metal band all using crate! tell him to get some ear plugs that statics gonna ruin his hearing later in life

I just read the OP and had to laugh. I also have a nephew who started playing bass a year or two ago. He is still trying to get his taste in gear straight.

Dont feel bad about him trading in any of that stuff. It was him being a kid and not thinking things out. Thats how kids learn. Im sure he is plenty greatful of all the gear and advice you have given him. He will learn.

Let it go. Be there for him when he begins to see the light. I got some good advice from TBers about pulling back from having all the answers to my son's bass-playing needs. There's more to growing up well than having the right gear. Allow your self a long sigh, then get back in the "My uncle's really cool" game.

I hope he gets a TB account and reads this thread.

Having an entire community tell him he made a mistake should be a wake up call.

They were probably thinking they would get a Crate endorsement deal or something so they all needed to play Crate gear not realizing Ampeg and Crate are the same company and Loud Tech get even buy a free cup of coffee at this this point.

I roger Jimmy

...?

As for the topic at hand, the kid made a mistake, I can't for the life of me understand why you seem so adamant about not going to re-trade the gear. Your Nephew will be a lot better off with the old gear, rather than his appalling choice of Crate.

Earlier in the topic you said you were going to play the 'I told you so' card. Gloating to your siblings child is pointless, and will just make him feel really really stupid and belittled, as opposed to going with him to re-trade the gear (if you do that, you might even get an apology and a thank you for your effort).

Let the whole thing go, the kid probably wont listen.

I know exactly what your newphew is doing and it may be stupid but he is going to have to learn through mistakes.

I never listened to advice and then i figured out i was being an idiot and stopped.
Im sure he will probably make another mistake down the road but getting him the stuff you gave him back wont teach a thing.
