again, do a quick test by panning the vocals L then R (into your mono out to the PA) and tweaking the threshold and output control on the comp until they're fairly equal volume on each side.
if you get nothing out of the comp then you have the insert cable send & return backwards
I got that going yesterday. Works perfect. It all makes sense now. Now what about drums? Insert channel or is there another way?
drums you can channel insert; set your other comps as gates for kick and toms, and bypass the compressor part (turn up the comp threshold to where the comp never kicks in).
try to be as sparing with the gates as you can; what you're looking for is that magic spot on the threshold knob where they open up with even light taps but don't open up when other drums are being played. you can't always get that, so err towards letting them through more, so the drummer's little ghost notes and such don't get cut off.

Nope. Set the mic about 6" away from the resonator head and that helped a bunch. The noise gate helped too.
so you are still wrestling with a no-hole kick, you just finally have it pinned to the mat
some guys mess with mic'ing the batter head,essentially mic'ing the kick the same way as the other drums on the kit, but the problem is the noisy snare bottom blasts into the kick mic.
a cool solution (if the drummer could be convinced) is to rig up a kick mic inside the (closed off) kick drum. there are the fancy [Invalid or Expired Link Removed], but something could be rigged with a tom mount pole down inside the kick with a multi-clamp thing on it, the mic wired to a little XLR pigtail fed out through the center of that tom mount pole, or maybe one of the little vent holes kick drums usually have. this of course means no tom mounted on that pole in the kick.
that's really all on the drummer though, if he wants to be more "pro" and offer an easy way for any soundguy to deal with his kick drum.
