I think side-mounted jacks look better, but I've busted some cords sitting down with them, and they are a pain to put on a stand. I did some mods to a P-Bass once, and moved the jack to the side. It looked cool, but it was more of a pain than it was worth. I moved it back.

Output Jack - Side or Front?

Have any of you guys ever seen an output jack on the neck, or the back, and who checked headstock and why, that seems a bit unrealistic,
I vote side. But there is a lot of side on a bass! Find a place where it will not conflict with neither your lap nor a stand.
I also think that "strat style" is pretty cool - I believe Ibanez uses it (right, Usul?), unique to the bass world?
"Back" isn't all that stupid, if you use a single point strap, you put the jack in the center of it. I believe ZZTop used something of the kind.
But I still vote side...

Bruce, why do you come in the thread if you never answer the question? It didn't ask what thread it should be in, it asked "Output Jack - Side or Front?"
Anyways, I'm gonna say on the front just because 2/3 of my basses have it on there and they work good for me.

The Aria Steve Bailey bass has a Strat style jack mounting plate on the front.
it looks neat, but can be troublesome to tighten when the mounting nut gets loose....
Billy Sheehan's Attitude bass has a similar idea (and with stereo outputs) but without using a plate.
No, don't. Leave it here and continue the debate. I'm enjoying it more than the poll.
BTW, I prefer front mounted 'cause the jack always falls out off of any side mounted bass I play.
Hey there Fretless Friday... Fender did and still does put a side output jack on some models.

I will only buy a bass with side jacks. I don’t like the cable coming around to the front and it gives more room for controls on the front.
Well, this thread has come back to life, partly with my help, so why not keep it going, I guess…
I share these sentiments pretty much, but with only one exception….
On a Precision-style bass, I’ll leave the front-mounted output jack alone. There’s plenty of room for it and it just…..is…..
I had considered moving the output jack to the side when I bought my Mike Lull P5 Precision-style bass, but quickly decided against that idea. It just wasn’t necessary and it seemed like some kind of sacrilege and as it’s a 5-string, it was probably already upsetting some kind of Precision-style time continuum or something….
Anywhere that accommodates a conventional stereo / TRS jack...not a big fan of barrel jacks, even the supposedly "good" ones.
