My Magnum II had more growl than any other bass I've owned, although I believe part of it was due to its setup. It was also the heaviest bass I've ever owned Not a slap & funk bass, IMO, nor would I use it as my primary bass, but it's a unique and fun instrument.

I hear the Magnum makes a pretty good reggae/dub bass. I know ex-PIL side man Jah Wobble uses one. I wouldn't make it my primary axe but I think it'd be good fun as a backup.

String it with TI's, play with a pick, run both pickups on full and its actually perfect for post-punk/new wave.

100 years ago (a hundred I say...)...

.. pulled one off the rack in a music store and tried it. I found it very interesting and the body style is cool ... who knows, with a fresh set of rounds, it might sound good for slap / pop... but I can't say because the one I played had a set of strings that were 100 years old.

Used to fool around on a friend of mines...it weighed about as much as an oldsmobile 442 and had the power to keep up with it. Huge bottom end. I never liked a neck humbucker of the Gibson/Sheehan Yamaha basses, but it worked here. I just remember thinking that there was no way I was going to be able to play a full gig with one.

I have one...needs repaired though... It's also a magnum 2. Got it for 25$ took apart put it back together sent it to ovation for a new preamp (300$) worked like a dream..was totally stripped of a finish but I love that bass..if you are onto old school Lofi funk then yeah you can slap on it. They sound kinda hollow on the slap,the pop is gritty as heck...like its been said these basses have growl for days. The bridge can also be pushed on while playing for a "whammy" effect. I am sure that is not recommended. Another little trick on the magnum 2 is take the caps off the double sliders on the EQ the you have 6 sliders. Take the low end ones and put the lowest one all the way up and the next one all the way down. Leave the remaining 4 in about the center....instant Dub bass. Low end will make you check your pants. These basses are very versatile I used mine in a metal band for years and for some finger style funk
