overdrive/fuzz quest

Hmm. it's got alot more articulation and note definition than my tubesound fuzz has. i'll have to take a peek inside of mine.

I know. The sound samples are excellent. Way better than my TSG. That's why I picked it up. The gut shot showed a 16 pin chip which made me think it was a CMOS inverter chip.

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but the other day I picked up an Empress MultiDrive
and this pedal can get some awesome overdrive sounds on bass.
It has the bass overdive sounds I've been searching for/wanting for a while.
It's highly versatile in the drive sounds you can tweak up.
IMO this pedal is a bada** bass overdrive!

Steve, I'm so glad you like it, and I'm happy it went to a a fellow TB'er who would appreciate it for what it is. I really wanted to like it, but it just wasn't my thing. It just goes to show how subjective 'good OD' really is. As for me, the Way Huge Pork Loin is pushing my buttons right now, in a good way.

well, after experimenting with the MXR blowtorch ALOT more, i've decided that it's going back. the fuzz that it has in it just isn't 'natural' sounding to me ( it's just too syntethic and fizzy), sitting on top of the clean tone. i love it's punch, but not its fuzz, and the bass control just adds too much mud.

IMO, my modded Bad Monkey (i bought it for $40 brand new) puts it to shame, as does the Digitech bassdrive (and i got that one for $40 too).

BTW, The TC Nova Drive has a TON of options/settings, and after working with alot more, i got it to sound great too. and it seems to work better in front of the amp, instead of the loop.

you know what? you're absolutely right. here's a pic of my tube sound fuzz's circuit (that i built in 1978) and as it turns out, it sounds ALOT like the Greedtone, just not as articulate.

I thought the Greedtone demo sounded like a Red Llama with better bottom. Which makes me reeeeealllly wanna try one.

The Black Sheep's dynamic response just seems to work perfectly with my fingerstyle techniques. It's a lot less of adapting my attack to the pedal, than the pedal expressing my attack.

I also want a crack at a Blasko Overdrive.

well, this clip pretty much confirms that the Greedtone is my personal favorite overdrive by far.
AVRI '59 P Bass/SS rounds/SVT7Pro (all tone controls at noon)/215 3015 cab recorded on my zoom H4n about 8" off the top speaker:

the clip goes as follows:
the first riff is bypassed
the second one at minimum gain (fuzz)
the third is at about 50% gain
the forth one at almost full gain,
the fifth one is at full gain with the 'more' switch engaged.

This sounds fantastic. I can't wait to get mine in to try it out. This clip is way better than that YouTube video.

thanks. i think that you're gonna love it.
even though their video is super distorted, i could tell that it had a nice overal fuzz/OD effect without losing a bunch of low end. it's distortion isn't fizzy, but more 'chunky' and it fades out nicely with the signal since it's also touch sensitive. another super great thing about it is that this is one of the only fuzz/OD's that works great in the loop if you want to dial in some of your clean signal.

yep, i really wanted it for just a little 'push/hair' but i also love how it sounds when it's really grinding.

since i really like the Seymour Duncan twin tube blue (SFX-11) too, i just got it out to A/B it with the Greedtone and surprisingly, even though it's about as different of a method to get OD/distortion as you can get (it's 100% tube), i can actually dial it to sound exactly like the Greedtone, so if you don't want to spend big bucks on a greedtone, you can find used SFX-11's for a great price. i paid only $115 including shipping for mine, whereas i paid $215 (shipped) for my greedtone (also used).


............but, with only two knobs, the Greedtone is basically 'idiot proof'. you just plug into it and go.

Some of you guys have some fine *** expensive amps to be looking at cheap pedals. That's kinda like getting WalMart brand tires on your Ferrari....even if it's a muddy Ferrari....but if you're going to spend money on a high end amp, you gotta shell out the cash to get quality pedals. Otherwise you're just cheapening the sound of that expensive guy.

It'd be like seeing someone play amazingly high end pedals through a Behringer.

That Duncan pedal is a possibility. You're not the first I've heard who says it works well on bass, and the price isn't bad at all. Only thing stopping me is my switching over to the REDDI from the cab mic. I don't want the highs to be intolerable, which is why I'm still using the VT Deluxe. But I also think that full range pedals being filtered by a tweeterless cab sound better than a pedal with speaker sim built into it. Probably being really anal about it, but I think even though you can't hear them coming out of the cab, having them there makes a difference. Only thing is there's no way to make that work through the DI without some sort of speaker-like rolloff, so I imagine I'll get worked up enough about these pedals you're trying for another couple days, and then stick with the VT just like I did a month ago ;)
