Overdrive?

It really hasn't gotten a whole lot of praise or love on the TB forum, but I'm a pretty big fan of my Ibanez TS9B. That's exactly what I use it for. A subtle bit of overdrive.
The Bad Monkey is a tube screamer clone with a bass knob; for me it did 95% of what the TS9B did for $50.

The Pork Loin and Green Rhino are for guitar, but work great on bass.

The Fulltone OCD is an awesome pedal, very flexible and musical, a real bargain at $130 at GC. And search online for the lowest advertised price as GC will price-match, you can probably get it for more like $120.

And someone will probably sing the praises of the SansAmp VT character pedal- that one gets lots of love, although I have never tried it personally. Especially if you dig that Ampeg sound.

To be honest, I never even knew the Bad Monkey was a decent option until I joined the TB forum (after purchasing the TS9B) I would've given it serious consideration, as it get's a lot of high marks around here.

It's really a "bang for the buck" kind of deal, IMO it's not an earth-shattering super-inspiring pedal, but it works well and is a bargain. Some people get them as cheap as $30 or $35.

+1 on the Bas Monkey if you like the Ibanez TS.
If one mention Tech21, well than one can mention that they have lots of good OD/ amp emulators, not only the VT bass but also the BDDI (more generic tube OD), Oxford (orange OD style), Leeds (HiWat OD style), Liverpool (Vox), British (Marshall).

I'm looking for an overdrive pedal that isn't too powerful, but just enough to where you can still here the actual bass playing and not just a bunch of distorted fuzz. What would you guys suggest?

Random Suggestion.....(rolls the dice and consults the chart of bass overdrive pedals)

Today's recomendation is: SFX Bad Monkey.

It is the Digitech Bad Monkey, enhanced by SFX to work better with bass.

I see people recommend the Bad and Badder Monkey all the time, but I have yet to find any clips on it.

So someone should do that, to prove it's worth. :D

Since I am one that frequently recommends the Bad Monkey I will work on making a demo. I can't find a single You Tube clip with it on bass!

That looks cool except for the cost. By the time you spend $111 USD for the mod plus the cost of the pedal you would be in the $150 range.
The Humphrey Bad Monkey Bass mod is only $55. IMO it helps a bit but is really not necessary for the pedal to work with bass.

i have just tried the EHX big muff at a local shop here... sounds great. you can have the OD sound without losing the bottom plus it has a bypass output, im not sure what it is for but i think that's for another line for your bass out ...

i might be ordering the EHX bass big muff soon.. hahahah!!

Will these pedals (ts9b and the bad monkey) sound bad on an amp that doesn't have any tubes?... Also, my bass is active.. Does that change anything?

That's subjective. I like the chainsaw sound you get with bumped, grindy mids with either SS or tubes. But there's people out there that think you should be shot if you use those effects with anything but tubes.

I'm all for ebs pedals.. I have the octabass it's awesome! but i still like the sound of the ibanez tube screamer for bass the best. I was reading this thread though and this guy had a good point.. The name of the pedal is tube screamer, how can you make your tubes scream if you don't have any? I just want to get the best sounding pedal for the setup I have and how I want it to sound.
