Overheard Conversations

Have you overheard part of a cell phone conversation and wondered what was being said on the other end or what the context was? Or maybe it was an actual face to face conversation. (Imagine that :D). I thought it would be fun to post some of the things we have overheard.
We could also start being snoopy and pay attention to what is being said around us and post that here.
Here is a couple I have heard.
I was walking up the street in downtown San Francisco when a 30ish woman passed me going the other direction. She was on her phone and this is all I heard:
"... if I was going to start thinking you are weird now ..."

I overheard one of my favorites in the admissions office at San Francisco City College. A young guy was on his phone. He appeared to be about 19-years-old and was dressed like a wannabe gang member. I heard him say this:
"... Dude ... don't dude me ..."

A few years ago, I overheard a girl I worked with arguing with her husband on her cell phone. Apparently he wasn't too happy about her moonlighting as a stripper.

She didn't realize I was still at my desk the entire time.

Things were very, er..."awkward" between us for the remainder of time she worked there.

Had a temp in our office who started screaming at her boyfriend on the phone. She called him names that referred to his relationship with his mother. She scared one of my co-workers who wasn't used to that sort of thing. Nothing subtle about that conversation. Can't imagine how she thought that would be okay.
Our boss was out of the office and I said nothing to anyone. Our boss called her within ten minutes. Apparently most of the residents in our cubicle jungle contacted him.

Sitting out on the patio at the local watering hole I've overheard many discussions about sex, sometimes in very great detail. No inhibitions or concerns whatsoever over a stranger listening in. It's as if they're discussing the weather or football.

Sometimes I'll be sitting in a public place like say Starbucks and there are conversations going on all around me but I'm not really paying any attention. It's like white noise. Then someone will say a word or phrase that pulls me out of my coma as if they said it directly to me.

Blah blah blah blah blah VW GTI. I'm like WAIT WHAT????!!!

Unfortunately I was born with one of those booming voices. Even when I whisper. Serves me well on stage..... Last year I was interviewing ladies for an accounting position in our office. There were five ladies outside the office. I thought I was keeping my voice under control.... The third lady walked in for her interview and looked at me sheepishly and said.... Sir, we can hear every word you are saying..... She is on the company payroll now...

My cubicle is right by the door to our office. People have impromptu meetings in front of my desk and act like I am surrounded by the dome of silence. Sometimes I hear things about the company that I probably shouldn't.
One day a woman in our office had a very personal conversation with someone that I wish I didn't hear. I like her and I struggled if I should say something to her or not.
Finally I did tell her that I could hear conversations that people have in front of my cubicle. She seemed a little embarrassed but it wasn't too bad. I told her I would never reveal her conversation to anyone and I haven't. We are still good friends and neither of us has ever bought it up again.

When I was younger & a lot dumber, but braver...
I was in a pub in Sydney (my daily stop-off) & the little old lady next to me was telling her story about her son to the lady next to her,

it was heartbreaking, this poor defenseless old lady was being badgered by her son to give him money, but she had none to give him.

I spoke up at one point & she told me to mind my own bloody business, then the son came in & was practically strong-arming her out of the pub.
I intervened & nearly knocked him out with only one more day left in Sydney, was headed to Melbourne via Nowra the next day.

The pub manager was appreciative, saying someone should have done it long ago. I drank Carlton free the rest of the day, but I worried about what was going to happen to that poor old lady w/o someone around to help her out.

Thanks now if I ever have to hire again I know a good test to identify potential candidates.

I dated a girl whose father was like that - his trigger words were "wireless broadband". This was 25+ years ago and I had no idea what that meant!

I had this phenomenon happen the other night when I was out wth the boys. I was a few whiskies into it, but I caught the end of the conversation "....and then I pulled it out with pliers". To which I quipped "that was the title of your sex tape"? (With a nod to B99)

I used to make stuff up. I'd be with a companion (male, female, relative, friend, whoever) on an elevator and right when the doors would open to let us off, I'd start in with 'It was an astonishing thing for her to say to him, given that his wife...' and by then we'd be enough steps away that I didn't have to finish my sentence. I imagined the people waiting to get on the elevator thinking 'Whaaaaaaat' and that was the whole idea. :-) I had several 'story starters.' Wish I could remember more of them now.

Passed a guy holding a car door open while riding my bike to work this morning. They guy was looking down on a woman sitting in the drivers seat and saying "No, I'm not frustrated because," I couldn't hear why he was not frustrated. Then he said "Guess again."

I thought to myself "Really? You want her to guess why you are frustrated while you keep her captive by holding the car door open. Why not just tell her why you are frustrated? This is not going to turn out well."
Fortunately I kept my mouth shut and rode on.
