Overrated bass players

I can't listen to Jaco.

Everytime I do find a video on YouTube or something It's just him hitting harmonics, playing a few notes, and tweaking the knobs on his bass or amp. Maybe I'm finding bad videos, but it looks about the same as a drunk person noodling a fretless bass.

Someone give me some good videos. ;)

I would prefer if you left the personal attacks out. I like bassists for the music they play, not how they look (why the hell would I like Geddy as a bassist for how he looks? He's freaking UGLY!). Not "getting" Jamerson speaks nothing of my intelligence nor my maturity, and it does not apply to yours either. Please refrain from being preachy and insulting . . . I thought it was supposed to be the "million notes a minute" people and not the Jamerson fans who were elitists . . .

Anyway not aimed at you on that one you quote above, but made as a general point, but I did send you a PM if you want to bother to check it! Sorry if you took this at you.. I was aiming the prior post at you actually. which consisted or a smilie..

btw.. I'm also a million note a minute elitist.. ;) <- I did post the Jaco links! :D

Videos?! Listen to, no, buy "Jaco Pastorius", "Standards Zone" and "Night Passage". Jaco's video output is not what he's about man. Come on.

the 2nd video was deffinitly better, but it mainly just sounded like he was running through scales especially when he was soloing, most videos i find of him he seems to just be playing about with the knobs on his amp and bass and to make sure the crawd dont get board he'll hit a few notes here n there lol

Yeah. Me too. The albums are great, but I'm wondering if she really can pull it off. I was really disappointed with her playing of that DVD.

OK..... I've moved through most of this thread and I haven't seen anyone mention Adam Clayton from U2. blah blah blah blah (key change) blah blah blah blah (key change) blah blah blah blah blah. He's the whole reason I never got into U2.

I agree.. U2 could have really benefited from a JPJ type bassist, and I would be willing to be more of us "musical snobs" would have added U2 to our list of "approved bands" had they.

but when you listen to 99% of todays' bands thats what the "American Idol" public wants now.. I mean, sneak a peak into some of the threads on this forum where they talk about various bands that (I'll admit I've never heard of), and then listen to a sound clip from the bands website, and it's Adam Clayton ,except the guitar is usually full distortion and the whole thing just sound so "produced"..

I agree with you. I KNOW that players like Jaco and Les have their fans. I didn't mean it to say THEY failed.

I was more speaking to the many music snobs who bitch about the success of "lesser talented" individuals. That they somehow don't deserve it. I have been in this biz long enough to know that if you reach ANY level of success....even if it is in the local market.....you have worked hard and earned it. It might SEEM overnight, but it usually is not.

John Entwistle definately was a great player AND clearly the BEST musician in the WHO. However he owes ALL of his success to the much lesser PLAYER Pete Townsend. Pete wrote 99% of the music. Pete had hit albums SOLO, John did not. I love the OX, but the WHO continues without him.....and will sell out stadiums....The WHO could not continue without Pete or Roger.

By the way, I also agree you make music for yourself and hope others will love it as well. BUT don't downgrade other players because they can touch more people than you (not YOU, figurative you) can.

Agreed.

At college, I get to meet a lot of people who are music snobs, but on opposite sides of the spectrum: there's the group that thinks that only the most super-technical, compositionally talented, uber-musicians are worth their time, and everyone else is just an untalented sellout duping the stupid masses into buying their records. On the other hand, we have the people who constantly ridicule anything more complex than "Mary Had A Little Lamb" as being pretentious, overblown, and soulless, and that simplicity and lack of professional skill is a sure sign of true emotion and talent.

Needless to say, I get annoyed at all of these people a lot. Unfortunately, I do not have enough sense to tell myself to pick my battles, and that entering the fray on this particular subject with said people is a waste of time. Hopefully I'll pick up common sense sooner or later, but then again, it's not a requirement for college!

Style wise, JPJ has Jamerson written all over him, as for Enwistile, he carried Jamerson further with his work in the Who, and as another member so aptly put it, he WAS the who's best musician, but not their best song writer... ;)

Lee's self taught style is amazing in it's own way, but more impressive about Lee for me is his composition of the bass lines, not so much their difficulty or "feel".. Jaco, well, he's Jaco.. what more can one say.. fast, talented, and Jazzy.. Great Jazz man in the Pat Matheny sense.

I know exactly what you mean. The PUNKS will downgrade anything non-PUNK saying it is pretentious and the listeners are snobs. YET the PUNKS are just as big a bunch of snobs as the JAZZ crowd....the ROCK crowd....the etc etc.

I have a very wide listening taste. Why should I be punished into listening to only ONE genre? In fact why would ANYBODY want to be stuck listening and supporting only one genre.

I listen to everything and have played everything. Now I PREFER hard rock but I still listen to Nat King Cole, Roy Orbison, Alan Jackson, Skynyrd, etc etc.

I HATE modern jazz.....BUT I would never say the players SUCKED and the fans were ********.

I am self employed and I have always said I have learned something from every guy I ever met in my field.....from the least talented to the most talented.

In fact I find that usually the WORST players are the BEST songwriters. I think it is because they don't get all caught up into what people will think.
