Overrated Bass Players

I feel all named are great in their styles and essential to their respective bands.
Would you want to hear Motorhead with Stanley Clarke? Not saying it wouldn't be interesting but don't you think Lemmy gets it done just fine for them?
All named are way more successful as players than me so who am I to put them down.

.... I'm not a beetles or Mcartney fan but he has moved possibly billions of people with his craft. This would rate really highly for me when measuring ones ability. Music shouldn't be analysed too much from a technical view point I think. Who cares how many notes someone can fit into a part! If it sounds good then the objective is achieved.
Now I'm just rambling....

It's true that he didn't really demonstrate chops like Geddy or Flea, but Paul was the master of the bass counter melody. He wrote some beautiful rifs.

I respect your opinion, however I think McCartney was one of the pioneers of bass. At least Chris Squire and Geddy Lee had something to start off of, McCartney started off from scratch.
I agree. Cliff was good as a thrash bassist, but he was not versatile. He should never be entered into a conversation about bassists other than thrash bassists.
I personally think its not that hard to play fast on a low-action bass if you hide behind distortion and effects. Cliff's playing was, I think, a little bit too reliant on distortion. Once again that is perfect for thrash, but not the alpha and omega of bass playing. Moreover if he had not died in such tragic cirumstances then who might still be talking about him today?
