P bass vs Jazz vs Ray4 comparison

Compared side to side “in the mix”. I also made a poll because because I think polls are fun!

For me, the J had it (surprise!!). It had the most complete sound of the three, and they all sounded good. But I've been playing Jazz Basses since 1966, so I'm a bit prejudiced on what I like to hear.

I thought it had better body to the overall sound including the low end with more harmonics than either the P or the Ray4. Thought it was better in both finger style and slap than either of the other two. I actually preferred the Ray4 in your sample better than the P and that surprised me. Sounded like a clearer bottom end on the Ray4 than on the P. The P sounded muddy "by comparison". Not that it's a muddy sound. Usually with the low-mids it has a very distinct and solid low-end. By comparison on my Jazz, I dial in a little low-mid boost at ~250Hz to get the presence and definition that I like with my passive Jazz.
