P bass w/ ash/maple bodies or alternative woods

In my case its a 70's Japan Masada bolt neck P bass (cant load pics right now), with ash wings and the center is maple with what appears to be walnut strips.

Not sure of the type of ash but it was a bit softer sanding than the maple center block.

The bass turned out very good...for now a cheap alnico 5 import P pickup at 8.9k so not as hot as 60's Fender P basses but im rather shocked at the tone/response.

I have Peavey P bass types made of either poplar or maple (but a softer version than rock maple).

Curious what other woods folks have in their straight up P bass style basses and how do they compare to ash and alder overall in tone and weight?

This Japan Masada is around 8 1/2 lbs which is decent as well and balances near perfect even with the stock Japan tuners (that hold tune well).

man, i hate that! i really want to see your ax...and you know everyone else will want to see it, too. :D


i have one P-bass. the body is paulownia. it's uber lightweight. it's almost extreme with body resonance. the fact that it's a great P means way less to me than the fact that it's very light. ;)

Im working on the pics thing! I forgot to mention there is no pickguard and the whole bass was re-finned clear in Tru Oil...havent decided on control knobs but the bridge is chrome w/ brass saddles.

Beautiful. I'm looking to build one as a project.
I have a MIM J that I swapped out the bridge and pick ups to EMG actives.
Now I want to build a P natural finish. Been researching wood types and necks and electronics.
