I have a hard time believing someone with no keyboard experience just jumped on the keyboard bassline to "Pleasure Principle".

I forgot just how hard that song was. I could have done it back in my keyboard bass days, but it would have taken me two hands, and I still would have flubbed something. I probably would have sequenced some of that.

Assuming his reading background might be weak, I he showed evidence of having studied beyond what the gospel drummer had shown when he was assigned rudiments. That is a low bar, but he did put in more work relatively speaking.

Here's my point: imagine you're in what you think is a legit competition. You have x number of people in each musical category who can move to the next level. After the first cut and during the second one, someone who looks like they might get cut is allowed to change categories. Did they even see the guy play drums or were they taking his word for it?

That's lame. Very. And he didn't perform the drum task either, the same one that got people sent home. That's basically getting two passes in one episode.

I know one of the bassists who got cut on that episode, he's a DC area bassist. Haven't talked to him yet... maybe he should've mentioned he plays keys.

Was Joy's issue really confidence, or the fact that she just didn't cut it on synth drums? She can get down on traps, though. Sad to see her go.

As far as Jamero, he gets brownie points for tackling key bass, but I have to be real.....I have issues with an industry that tells someone that they have to be something else in order to get the gig. That's one of my disdans about the 80s; a whole lot of musicians were forced to be DX7-heads! A lot didn't survive. A few (like Marcus) did!

Just watched the episode online. Very interesting. Joy's problem was....she didn't cop the correct feel! I was cringing while listening to their performance! She struggled and it showed that she wasn't as versatile as she thought she was. If you don't cop the right vibe of a tune, it sounds forced and it did! It'll be interesting if they throw some latin stuff at the musicians. I'd love to see how they pull it off!

I didn't think it was fair to say Brockett should have played everything live. Remember, a lot of music back then was sequenced and one guy can't possibly play every part.

I agree with your last statement as well. I quit playing for a few years and did the 'keyboard' thing for a while!

As for the drummer who switched from keys......well it's obvious he's a way better drummer! He blazed it!

It seems that if you want to work in the context that this show presents, backing a big-time R&B/HipHop artist, that you would most likely HAVE to double on keybass.

Off topic: The funny thing about Moog bass is that IME, it really sounds thin live. My old Rickenbacker really filled up the room compared to my Moog Rogue.

I honestly believe that Jamereo's statements about not knowing keyboards are exagerrated. I think all the bassists who are remaining have pretty solid musical educations, and have keyboard knowlege whether they are good keyboardists or not.

Attitude is important but the MD's attitudes are $h!+, sometimes downright condescending.

I'm taking this as a sort of a musical boot camp.

Also, I'm sure all of us on this board have come across MD's/bandleaders/producers who were downright pricks! That's just another aspect of the industry the musicians have to learn to deal with.

They are a part of the competition however they are not unknown to industry or the judges,for instance Tim Rains toured with Keysha Cole and Rob Lewis put together at least one of her touring bands so it's safe to say that Rob knows who he is and what his skills are. IMO I feel that the cattle call auditions were to make good TV and to create a buzz about the show. I know for a fact that there were some invitations extended for some of the players and they didn't have to wait in line.

I think this might be the case. I got a "VIP" pass for the NYC casting call/audition so I didn't have to wait in the crazy line on 25th St. A few of the "VIPs" that I talked to were established touring pros.

The show is a very cool idea - backing musicians don't usually get this kind of camera time. The 80s challenge was really illuminating because it involved some of the more technical obstacles of being in a live hip-hop/R&B group like sequencing parts, key-bass, etc.

Wow. Never heard that before. I've never used one myself, but Neil Evans from Soulive got a tone with a Mini Moog that almost made me cry with jealousy. ENORMOUS tone that stayed clean no matter what.

He probably had a much better amp/PA than I had. I remember seeing Midnight Star back in the early 1980s, and the keyboard blasted even louder than Larry Graham and his monster rig!

I have been privied to the results of the show but I will keep those to myself.
I will say I was surprised to see Tim "rawbiz" Williams. He is a very established musician. He recorded on GMWA at 17 and since had played and recorded for a list of people. He also attended berklee.
Chris Kee is gospel artist John P Kee's son and drummer. My sources say there was a lot of "hand selection" so to say on who made it on the show. I will say i'm enjoying the show, not too much diddy.

Sean on the keys is the one to watch.....I played in a gospel choir with him and he KILLED IT on the Hammond B3. He's at Berklee on a full scholarship. It's a shame they've hardly given him any airtime on the show.

I absolutely love your playing man. And, as I stated earlier in the thread, you seem to have a great attitude, which I'm sure is just as much a factor as your chops in getting those high-profile gigs.

Regardless of the outcome of the show, I'll definitely be following you from now on - you kill it!
