Who knows, though? Maybe Leo really thought that one of his earlier works was actually better, but he would never actually say so because trademarks and patents prevented him from duplicating it with one of his later companies....

(seems unlikely, though, considering he pretty much duplicated the original split-coil P and the J under the G&L banner).

If it were a poll option, I would vote for the Jaguar body. I like offset bodies, so I'd pick the Jazz. But for a P/J I prefer the Jag:

Most balanced, comfortable bass I've played. This one has a mahogany body and quartersawn maple neck. Both the P and J bodies feel clunky by comparison, as much as I revere both for their places in the ergonomic development of the electric bass guitar.

How, then, do you explain the relative "P" style of his self-proclaimed "best I ever made" G&L basses, or even the Stingray? Both of those are more P-like in shape than J-like.

How do I explain the unknowable? Okay-y-y-y
Let's see . . . .

Maybe he was getting senile.
Maybe he started experimenting with drugs he got from his famous clientele.
Maybe his vision was deteriorating.
Maybe he bumped his head.
Maybe all of the above!

LOL!!!!! Who knows?

I still love the Jazz Bass best.
. . . . . but that's just me. (and millions of others)

I've never been a huge Fender style bass fan but I stopped at a local shop yesterday that was having a 1/2 price sale and ended up walking out with a Squier Std. Precision w/ p-j pickups, black (semi) sparkle finish w/ white pickguard in practically new condition for $110.

Can't go wrong with a deal like that.... :smug:
