P/Js under 600

You can find plenty of PJ's for under 600 at Walmart ;)
Now, if you want a bass, well I'll recommend the Ibanez Soundgear and Soundgear Gio basses, some of which come in PJ, other's don't. I owned a GSR200 PJ bass for a while, and it had a really nice bottom end, but lacked a little bit of zingy highs even with new(ish) strings. I was still able to get a tone that worked well for most of the genres I play.
Edit: Guess I should tell you what genres I play. Anything from Metal to Punk to Alternative plus a very limited selection of Pop.

Lightweight P/J for under $600? See if you can try out a used Fender Aerodyne somewhere. Certainly I'm a bit biased, what with the 'Dyne being my very first bass, but it does fit your basic criteria.

Some say the pickups lack character. In my experience, the character is dependent upon finding the right strings for it. I've gone from flats to several different kinds/brands of roundwounds and every set has given it a drastically different voice. Sure, you'll get a slight/notable difference with this-or-that string change on any bass, but something about my Aerodyne makes that change almost akin to a full-on paradigm shift…go fig!

I've recently seen some decent ESP LTD Vintage basses for less than $400.00.

They might be a good bass to upgrade pickups, etc, if you wanted to.

Also, check around for some used Fender, Yamaha, or Peavey PJ basses.

You can grab a new Bb424 (424x with pickguard and chrome) or second hand Bb1024 (1024x with pickguard and chrome) they're both Made in Indonesia and sometimes sport mostly the same fnish (except for metallic red - for cheaper only - and charamel brown - more a trans amber - for the costier)

They're worth their value, with a mix of AlNiCo split pickup and ceramic bridge piuckup.

Cheers,
Wallace

+1 all day

Though I think they have different split pickups. The BB1024s have blades just like the bridge but the BB424 has poles.

+2 for this:

I love my $200 Yamaha RBX170.
