I LOVE P's, and pretty much grab for one 98% of the time - been that way for the last I dunno, 10-15 years. But I've just recently decided to start reaching for the Jazz first a bit more often, even in situations where a P is the obvious choice, just to see what happens….
For example, we think of old school RnB/Motown and of course think of Jamerson/Pbass, but then how about the bubbling, round tone JPJ has on many tracks on the early Zep albums, or Family Man on his Jazz--totally fits the same bill, just. . . .differently...

I can't answer. I own both. They're different. I prefer the J (with dr sunbeams rounds) right now, just because I haven't reached yet the sound that I want from the P with TI flats. And I prefer the J neck at the moment, since I switched from guitar not so much time ago...
I have tried TI flats with everyhting and I can't really use them on any bass I own.

If you're struggling with a flat to choose for the P, try DR Legends....brighter and more playable than Labella DTF's. TI Flats are like guitar strings to me.

All basses are very much a function of their mechanical setup, the electronics and the STRINGS.

One almost needs to answer your P or J choice with which strings you have loaded. P with DR Legends, Jazz with Elixir Nanowebs, Warwick Covette $$ with Ddadario chromes, Longhorn with GHS Precision flats.

Of P or J, my moon is in the P-phase for sometime.

I love my brooklyn octoberfest! Just saying.

That makes you P...

P and J both have there place depending on what you are doing. But if you're gonna force me to choose only one, I'm gonna go with P every time, it's versatility is legendary and will not be a point of contention with me.

My personal preference as far as components is concerned - P body, P and J pickup combination, thin profile J neck. That is my perfect bass.

I'd suggest trying a G&L SB-1 or SB-2 if you get a chance. Something about those Split MFDs produces more clarity but with all the punch.

On the SB-2 you only have two volumes. The bridge volume is supposed to be thought of as a tone control. It's not meant to be a hybrid, it's just the design. Only put the bridge volume at 100% if you want a mid-scoop, otherwise 90% bridge is the most I use for adding top-end.
+1 on the SB-2. Neck always 100%. I actually used the bridge volume as you describe.
