Well, okay, here's my honest imput.

Everytime I play a J, I like the tonal clarity but miss the punch that a P gives.

When I play a PJ, I feel like I'm playing a horrible mutation of a bass guitar.

I'd suggest trying a G&L SB-1 or SB-2 if you get a chance. Something about those Split MFDs produces more clarity but with all the punch.

On the SB-2 you only have two volumes. The bridge volume is supposed to be thought of as a tone control. It's not meant to be a hybrid, it's just the design. Only put the bridge volume at 100% if you want a mid-scoop, otherwise 90% bridge is the most I use for adding top-end.

I have a AVRI '63 pickup in my P and it is killer.

I have CS60s in my Jazz and they're killer

Until recently I owned four Jazz basses and I have never owned a Precision. On the other hand the one Jazz bass still in my possession is a PJ with a Jazz body and a neck that while also Jazz is almost as chunky as a Precision. I also have an SR605 which I love equally well and it has some things in common with both without being either. My third remaining bass is a Squier VI which is none of the above. So I had to vote Jazz but obviously I currently value variety over icons.

I'm currently in a Jazz phase.

Me too, PJs feel wrong. I'm weird about basses though, I feel like they need to be 'pure'. For example, an active jazz does not appeal to me, but a passive stingray makes me cringe.
