Partial refund on a damaged bass, should I accept?

I can live with wear from years of playing.
That might include a dent or two.
That much damage that looks to be deep enough to feel would bother me every time I picked it up.
If you know anything about trying to steam out the dents, that might be worth a try.
If not send it back.

I asked the same question last week...sent it back, glad I did. The finish on my Sire V9 was chipped and could easily spread, it was right at my elbow wear point. Hated to send it back but it for the best, I have had other guitars that finish that spread quick.

Those scars are located in a place where your forearm will come in contact with them regularly. I'd send it back.

I got this Gary Willis bass over a year ago at a (fairly large) store in Germany. Found it on Reverb but went through the store's own site to order it without the reverb fee. Market value was 1550 euros at the time, listed with this store for 1400. I didn't ask why the price was lower. It wasn't mentioned anywhere, as far as I remember. When I got it I noticed 2 little dings in the finish/wood on a black area on the bottom, so hardly visible. Had I returned it I possibly had to wait another year to get another one. They are not easy to get. So I kept it. it's like a 10% discount for what is essentially a B stock instrument. Since its fretless with roundwounds I could tell it was never played, due to the fingerboard being without any wear.

I noticed the shape of the dings is similar to yours. I don't know how this damage could have occurred in shipping. It was in a box in a box. I suspect they had it in their showroom and people handled it carelessly. But I don't mind. It sounds and plays fantastic. They go for 1700 to 1900 these days on reverb.

would be interesting to see for comparison what the photographed damage was before shipping, as well as the overall price of the bass.

If it plays well, and the seller is amenable to higher discount, I'd probably keep it. At least would be easy to decide which the 'beater bass' is

I'd accept $50 for a damaged Glarry, but not for a bass costing considerably more.

That wouldn’t bother me but I would need at least 200 bucks off. I resale most stuff so if I can’t get equal or more when I sell it I don’t want it.

I had a TB member ship me a bass in a box with 2 loose pieces of Styrofoam. Received it with a bent pot. I wish folks would learn how to ship fragile items. Especially musical instruments.

My reverb experience:
A) send it back for full refund.

or

B) take it to professional guitar repair shop and get an official quote to repair. File a claim with reverb. Even If the item was sold as is, reverb will withdraw the $50 from the seller and make up the difference out of their own pocket.

One of the good sellers here in TB gave me a $50 refund for a ground wire that needs to be resoldered, no questions asked, and promptly. He calculated the price of a new pot and tech labor. That is more than a $50 repair. I bought a CTS pot and a swtchcraft jack. Ask more

sounds like the seller didn’t give it a true look before posting it. IMO, you bought a used bass, with other chips and additional wear. This would not be significant enough for me to return. The bass isn’t a showroom piece to begin with. I do get it though. You paid for something and you didn’t receive what you paid for. If it’s me, I take the money off & enjoy the bass. If there’s chips in the neck, this damage to the body isn’t devaluing the instrument anymore (in my opinion) - it’s a wash to me.

For the price point of that bass, fixing it is not worth it (no offense meant). I would be inclined to return it. Sorry that happened to you.

Hey TB, on the fence about this one. Received a used bass via Reverb, Spector Legend Custom. Plays great, BUT it has damage that supposedly happened during transit. Seller offered me a $50 refund to keep it. It had additional wear and a few chips in the neck, but this was not disclosed. See pics. Thoughts?

I can forgive some scratches and nicks but that would be too much for me. Not acceptable.

It's going to cost him more than $50 to ship it back to himself.

I don't give partial refunds as a seller (because unscrupulous buyers often use this as a way to squeeze you for a discount after the sale)

As a buyer, I don't ask for one - if an item has been misrepresented then I return it and let the seller deal with the headache on general principle

If I liked the feel and tone I wouldn't care. I have new basses with worse wear and vintage ones with less.... I call it patina.
