musician/artist/owner - Gildaxe
'Parts bin' bass in the works - I'll be able to put together a bass from my stock of parts w/minimal spending. The (?) guitar body I've had around for 13yrs or so. It was bought on eBay for cheap as a test body to gild when I was developing Gildaxe. Originally metallic red, I basically threw the kitchen sink at it trying out different effects. Pretty.., unattractive. :) My plan is to finish it in satin black like the Epi Goth neck (a gift from a friend - so free) and expose some natural wood like I already did on the hs. The tape/center line is where 34" ends up. I'll use the same "tort" to cover the pu/bridge routs as my tr cover. I also have (new) individual gold Ibanez bridge units I bought many years ago, so satin black & gold is the colour scheme. It has two pot holes (V-T) and a 3-5 way pu switch rout. I may need to purchase that switch as I couldn't find one in my bin. I have two '60s Teisco pu's

Anyone know what make the body is? I'm guessing Ibanez.

The hs was reshaped prior and I had a new set of gold tuners, again - given to me by a person I did some work for. They bought the wrong tuner-shaft size & had to reorder correct ones. I dressed the frets/fb and cut a brass nut for it yet to be filed. I've used Epi Goth necks for a few projects and they are decent/worth working with. The direction of the upper 'swoop/hook' is the opposite of a standard T-bird.

It has the Strat-like whammy spring compartment in the back. It'll provide a nifty storage space for (?) whatever one chooses to store there.

Teisco singles from the '60s - hot pu's which were installed on many basses from Japan then.

Ibanez individual string-thru bridge-units. Maple platform routed/recessed into beveled body. Allows me to dial as close as possible between the Epi Goth neck width and Teisco pu poles.

Removed all the gilding and sanded for refinishing in satin black once all the routing is done. Brass nut filed, tr/action set... all initial, final set-up once finished and re-assembled.
upload_2024-4-10_12-50-50.jpeg

Bridge pu centered in the same location as my Teiscobird which for me is the single pu sweet-spot. The neck pu will be positioned where the rout above the tape is located.

First couple of coats of satin black/wet-sanding in between. The red is reflection of my red t-shirt. Once another wet-sand and possible a third coat & burnish, after it cures I'll scrap the paint off the bevels down to wood and rout the front mid/lower edge similar to the hs.

I really like the original rat rod color scheme in the first few pics.
I might just need sleep.

Yah, I always am prepared to like a stage of a work in progress, but I always weigh it against my final concept. So I did a quick sketch to visualize it better - I think the final gestalt will look better than my sketch...

Something along these lines -

Finishing is in progress - hand rubbed satin poly. Had to order a few parts; a sheet of this pg material - sometimes referred to as 'leopard print', it's actually closer to real tortoise-shell than what's generally referred to as "tort".

...and a distressed brass neck plate. I'm not a big gold-plating guy and can tolerate it for some guitar parts but a gold neck-plate just looks cheap. I'll take brass any day - distressed or shiny.

...while looking for a neck plate, I saw these two eBay posts... I guess the sucker who buys from this seller can't complain that he was... (wait for it) screwed.

Looking good. Where, if you care to reveal, did you order the leopard pickguard material from? Also, Electrosocket and barrel jack?

I searched high & low for 3-ply pg material in leopard print (I've bought it in the past but only have scraps) but could only come up with 1-ply. Once it arrives I'll determine if it's ok and if it is I'll recut the tr cover to match. I did find blk/wht/leopard print from the UK but for $80 shipped! If anyone finds 3-ply (blk/wht/LP) for a decent price (around $20) let me know. I looked everywhere.

I should have been more specific on the Electrosocket and barrel jack question, I meant why both?

I did a modification of the side mounted jack moving it to the front edge (45degrees) and the depth to the control cavity requires an extension. I'm hoping the threads match but if not I'll just have a barrel jack when I need one.

Very pleased with the way the finish is evolving. When wet-sanding the semi-gloss black I broke thru to the factory metallic red finish here & there. It wasn't my goal - it just happened. It's very subtle and cool looking so I decided to work that into the look. As you probably all know by now, I very much like distressed finishes and have a long-running thread here on tb on the topic. I like a nice factory shiny finish as much as the next guy or gal, but for me as a Decorative Artist - I've finished furniture, cabinetry, and interior & exterior walls & trim in a distressed fashion over many years. I've developed how to make it seen as a deliberate and convincing "look", one that enhances a living space. And as live performer, I don't like to fuss over the occasional dent, scratch or ding - in fact, I rejoice when it occurs because then I don't have to worry about adding more down the line! We generally play on tight stages and I'm always whacking something with my bass... oh well. Much more important things to worry about. :)

Note: you can see my corner jack entry rout in this shot - it'll become more clear what I'm doing once the electro socket is installed which will be a partially exposed look.

So after wet-sanding the black, I brushed on a thick coat of alkyd satin spar-urethane/poly and let it cure overnight. This morning I spent about an hour or more wet-sanding (w/P1000 emory cloth) the cured poly finish to smoothness. Lastly (for today) I brushed on a thin coat of wipe-on poly (much thinner viscosity) and it's settling/curing now. Tomorrow I'll do one more wet-sanding with P2500 emory cloth and probably do a final coat of the wipe-on poly. It's a finish I am attracted to not only in looks, but in feel - not factory shiny filled with finger-prints, but soft and smooth/satiny to the touch. It's labor intensive - but worth it in the end. I always reminds me of the way valuable vintage classical stringed instruments (violins, cello's and double basses) look with their time/player-worn hand-painted varnish finishes.

A shot with the (birds-eye) maple bridge riser unit I fabricated, also finished in satin poly. Unfortunately you'll only see the upper edges on 3 sides but it conforms to my subtle details gestalt.

Cut-outs & recesses are for the Ibanez bridge units which have extensions below the base surface similar to a G&L bridge.

The 'leopard-print' material arrived and is very thin, has sticky-back and is translucent much like actual tortoise-shell. Something I've considered. I had a partial sheet of 4-ply vintage green MOP, so I layered them together. Voila'! I created a new 'look'! "MOT" - Mother of Tort! I'll try to take a more detail pic - it's subtle but it actually looks pretty cool.

I re-sized the 1st pic so more details can be seen. The light-catching MOP looks like visual chatter between the dark blotches under the translucent yellow. Gives it visual depth.

Cool project

I don't think the body is ibanez. It looks like the carved top version of the Jackson Dinky, but I couldn't find an example with the SSH configuration. There were a bunch of similar designs in the 90s from a MIJ and MIK brands. Things like this Vester for example:

I was thinking late ‘80s or early ‘90s Yamaha.
