Looking back, neither is Purple Haze - but in their time all of these songs sent HUGE waves thru the music community and still inform players today.

BTW - have you heard Pat Metheny's version of Giant Steps on Trio 99-00? It's a beautiful version.

Very tasty. Not the typcal Meth-lab 320bpm kind at all.

Clearly an example of a "cover/tribute" that takes the original song to a new level.

Marcus Miller slapped Teen Town 12 years ago on drummer Kenwood Dennard's Just Advance C.D. It's basicly a jam album, with a lot of great playing from Marcus & Kenwood.

Marcus Miller slapped Teen Town on 'The Sun Don't Lie', his first jazz solo album (he also had some poppier eighties solo albums) back in '91 as far as I remember. No-one remembers that? I'm sure I remember some Jaco die-hards screaming 'sacrilege' at him for doing that. I'm sure Jaco would have loved it.

This little known, now defunct band out of Boston were all Berklee grads and they absolutely ruled that tune. You can find some of their shows on the Live Music Archive. IMO Brian O'Connell plays it better than Vic - no joke, and Tom Arey on the skins is quite impressive. I believe they sent a recording to the Pastorius family and got the go ahead to cover it. O'Connell is currently gigging with the Gordon Stone Band (not a bad step up) - he's got monster chops and is a very talented slapper as well - look to see this guys name a lot in the future.

Superb comparison there Jeff - I have to agree also - but I can say one thing in Vic's defense, but only one thing - is that he didn't have Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter's egos on his tale, kicking his butt to that higher plane! Weather Report set new standards because those guys were in competition with each other - and Jaco was perfectionist - and despite the fact I love 90% of what Wooten does, I have to say that those little 'mistakes' that have always been part of his playing, here just sound loose and messy - thanks for the unpopular, yet well informed opinion - I totally agree with you.

Listening to that MP3, I think Vic did a perfectly creditable job. I wouldn't go as far as to say that he takes it to a higher level than Jaco's original but, as long as you've got a taste for Wooten's stylistic nuances, it still bubbles along very nicely.

Two different souls but both still musicians who I respect.

Nice job on the MP3 comparison file, by the way. That was a useful way of getting them side by side.

Well, this is a bit off topic, but still names Wooten and (felix) Pastorius.

I just saw the bass day 2002 video, Vic really, really impressed me. His musical playing and phrasing was great, chops were insane, and his tapping was fast and CLEAN! I haven't listened to him for a while, but I'm gonna go pull out Show of Hands more often.

Then Felix came on. Now, I'm sure it's hard to live in the shadow of Jaco, but I was still unimpressed. I didn't hear anything particularly soulful, technical, heck even musical about his playing. To my ears, he sounded like a sloppy Jaco/Victa copy. I'm not going to judge him as a musician off that one performance tho, any others I should check out?

I'm sure thats one of the reasons Felix hasn't officially come out yet.....he knows people will be gunning for him :hiding:
I've seen that performance, and he seems a little tentative in his playing....no biggie.....I've heard from a couple friends who have seen him, and say he's a burner! I'd give him the benefit of the doubt for now :cool:
