Patchouli oil for fretboards?

The oil from your hands is enough for wood; all you need to do is clean it. Don't be fooled by people telling you to oil a fretboard; the reason fretboards have dried out is that nobody's playing them!

Been using it, (I call it Feed & Weed) for years. No desire for my basses to smell like dirty hippies. Been there, smelled that.

Would engine oil that hasn’t been changed in five years be an acceptable substitute for patchouli oil?

Jeez, can we all please agree to say "no" to patchouli oil and move on? The unabashed "hippie hatred" is getting pretty dense in here and IMHO, is borderline offensive. Or have "hippies" become the last group that it's OK to unfairly stereotype? I looked the part back then, (and maybe now as well) and bathed frequently. I also never had any desire to anoint myself with oils of any kind. What a silly thread!

That's because we all know Balistol is better.

I have a bottle of Old English lemon oil (not polish) that I bought many years ago that I'll use on dry boards on initial set up. I'll reapply maybe once a year if it seems necessary. I do so to protect it more against the humidity than anything. I've got dry hands and never actually touch the fret board when playing, so not much oil gets put in out side that.

Nitecaps was legendary in Lafayette. Alternative/Goth bar that was my hangout way back.
I've wanted to do a band playing that music around Lafayette for years. Never could get it going.
Good luck finding like-minded folks...
