Just a quick update for everyone here.....

I managed to get a message to Paul with copied text from all the lovely things everyone has been saying about him.

He's a man of few words who's been off the scene for a few years but he was thrilled at the love there is for him and simply said:

"How incredibly nice!"

Apparently, after being dealt a few heavy blows in his life recently, he is now trying to get back on track - in particular with his musical endeavours! Watch this space! :)

Very cool thread!

I was just talking to a couple local players this weekend about ARS and Paul. I grew up playing southern rock in the Macon GA area and had a chance to see ARS live several times. He was a very soild player. I always loved the bass line to "Angel" (What in the World's Come over Us).

Some good friends that I played with in the early 70's (Stillwater) shared their producer, Buddy Buie, as their producer. I know that they tour with them a couple times and ARS singer Ronnie Hammond still does their yearly Christmas reunion with them in Macon GA.

Glad that Paul is alive and hopefully happy and well. As I am from Atlanta, I have been lucky to see ARS a number of times with Paul and once without Paul.
Around 1976, at Alex Cooley's Agora Ball Room, I was lucky to sit next to Paul at the bar and chat. He was friendly and pleasant. As I was both a fan of ARS, Kansas...I was primarily a prog-rock bassist then... Anyhow..I don't know where I got the nerve, but, I told Paul that I believed that I understood what he was strivng for tone wise. He listened as I suggested that he use a Rickenbacker 4001 with Roto Sound strings, as I did. We finished our drinks and a year or so later at the first Champagne Jam..out comes Paul with a Rick and a pick, through a double cabinet SVT. Years later after ARS had gone through changes, I read where the complaint with Paul was his trebbly tone...I certainly hope it wasn't my fault..
In the late 90's, my wife and I saw ARS perform at Clayton International Park or "Atlanta Beach". Paul was no longer with ARS. Their bassist at that time used a 5-string MM but he was no Paul Goddard. Sadly I believe that there were less than 500 in attendance, yet ARS...all original line-up except Paul...gave it their all. Barry Baily patiently smoked a cigarette awaiting his spot. He got in...burned and got out... lit up and waited...repeated... Barry is an amazing Guitarist. After the show, they had a meet-n-greet all done with patience and class.
Last year, ARS played a local amphitheater in nearby Fayetteville. The only original member in that line-uip was Dean, their keyboardist.... No offense to Dean, but I couldn't imagine seeing them like that. I thought it was sad. Anyhow... Paul remains one of my fave Atlanta Bass players...Yes....WyZZard of Mother's Finest too..Another great bassist and great guy. I took one private lesson with him, as I just can't do the thumb-thump-pop-n-snap.The next week, MF moved to California. Now they are back in Ga. Sorry for my digressions... Paul is a monster player and a nice guy.

Can't say I was ever a huge ARS fan, and I wasn't really familiar with their earlier work; like a lot of folks, "So Into You" and "Imaginary Lovers" were when they really popped up on my radar.

But this thread got me curious, and I picked up some of the back stuff. Really enjoying it! Paul is indeed a great player; imaginative, melodic, and solid at the same time. I love for instance how he uses subtle texture shifts in "Mixed Emotions" from Red Tape. So cool!

Best of all, I'm hearing a lot of this great music for the first time. I can already tell, it's going to be with me in the car all summer long.

Btw, there are two great two-fers currently available on CD - "Dog Days/Red Tape" and "Third Annual Pipe Dream/Rock & Roll Alternative". I'll probably wear these out :)

You can now download the Are you Ready concert on an MP3 or Ipod. Go to gomusicnow.com and its really great prices. I think to download the whole album cost me about $1.75. Good quality too! Plus it has Paul kickin major butt on the bass. Its ashamed he doesnt play anymoore with the talent he has. Just like Mike Porcaro, our great one have disappeared or disappearing.

i met and had a bbq dinner with paul a couple months ago in atlanta. i sat right next to him and chatted with hi for about 90 minutes. at first i was hesitant to talk about ars and gear - i didn't want to be "that guy", but then after we were served and everyone got settled, i went for it. when i asked if he still has his natural-grain rick, he lit right up. we talked gear and gigs for most of the time i was with him. he was as nice and as gracious - and funny - as he could be. i am so glad i got the opportunity to meet and hang with him. great guy.

"Are You Ready" is an absolute KILLER live set. ARS is at the top of their game here (1979) folks. I love it!

I was just thinking about ARS and Paul Goddard, and noticed this thread.

Paul's bass style is so distinctive. I hope he's keeping the music with him in one way or another these days, even if it doesn't involve playing in ARS or even playing out professionally anymore.

I saw Paul as recently as Labor Day weekend. He sat in with ARS. Also sat in with them when they played in Woodstock in July. His wife, Phyllis died earlier this year. Paul is starting to get back into playing again. He has lost over 100 pounds in the last year. His favorite song of ARS is Angel. The ARS facebook page is kept up to date by Steve Stone, the ARS guitar player. There are some nice current pics of Paul on the page. Paul is very happy now and kind of surprised people still remember him. He is very nice and always ready to shake a hand and talk music!!

I'm looking forward to seeing Paul play bass sometime, dtr. I caught ARS live back in 1980, it's been awhile. He is talented on bass.

Sorry to hear about his loss.

I don't have a facebook account. Anybody have recent live pics and/or clips of him playing to share?
