Pawn Shop Gems?

Not a pawn shop, a mom & pop music store about 35 miles from here. A mid 70's Matsumoku Electra P bass copy for $59. And it had a brand new $40 set of Labella black tapewounds on it too!

Not quite as good of a deal as KenToby's P bass, but not bad either. And all it needed was cleaning up. Works great, came with bridge cover, and has a good, stable neck.

Gonna try to pick up the serial number and find the year if I can.

If the year is right and the turnaround is big enough, I'll go ahead and pick it up for resale.

Considering how ignorant I was/am when I picked it up, I am still pretty stoked that my first bass remains my favorite. $100 at a pawn shop.

And it looks a little on the older side. The finish seems a smidge faded. And the store dun open for another 8 hours.

Well, I dunno about that. I'm honestly not a very wise bass buyer and am not particularly well versed in price points.

It also doesn't help that I'm living off my VA disability stipend. Fixed income sucks.

I can't find the thread - but wasn't there someone who picked up a Sadowsky for a couple hundred bucks at a pawn shop because the owners thought it was one of those cheapo Fender knock-offs??

It was probably stolen tho...

weren't they guitar pickups because when they were first introduced, the company didn't have any bass pickups that would fit into the bass? I believe it's got narrow spacing (and a short scale)

The covers look a lot like Fender XII pickups, but I believe they only have four pole pieces inside. I do believe the Musicmasters might have had guitar pickups in them... I know my old one sounded much better through a guitar amp, but that might have been just me.

I am amazed how fast the short scale Fenders have gone up in price. I bought a 1966 Mustang bass in Sonic Blue with a case for $375 in the early '90s. I got $350 for it in trade for a P-bass I still own a couple of years later, but that thing has to be worth a bunch more now...

Call me a nub if you want, but I have a hard time associating such a tiny pickup with any deep sound.

As I mentioned before, with that beater P, I'd prolly reroute it for an EMG split and an EMG HZ (kind of in a PJ format) - but that's mostly because my interests, preferences, and taste seem to parallel whatever it is I start with or currently have.

Very easy to add, had to make a new pickguard. Minor if any cutting to the bass- I don't remember any, but it was the early 90's.

got an ibanez soundgear in a pawn shop the other day for $30 cause an imput jack was missing im happy with it bought another imput jack for a few bucks at the music store

If I remember correctly, he got it for $130 or something like that. He called Roger himself to see if it was stolen and it wasn't.

That probably about ties the vintage Fender for $150 find.

I've had a lot of minor pawn shop scores. Mt 1st pawn shop purchase was an Ibanez Roadstar II RB850 for $200. The price was ok, but up until that time all I ever owned were Fenders; that bass opened my eyes to a lot of things.

Anyway, here's some of what I've found in pawn shops:

Well, got the OK from HQ to buy the beater and turn it into a piece of awesome.

Gonna go grab it after wifey gets off work this evening. Gonna check the serial number on that Mustang while I'm there.

On that note, is there any sort of database online I can look at for Fender serials?
