paypal

Just because there are people out there who will rip you off, and Paypal won't pay you recompense for the ripoff, doesn't mean the transfer of money wasn't secure. It's like a safe, where only you and one other guy have the combination. Nobody's breaking into the safe... but there's no guarantee about the other guy with the combination.

Either way though, Paypal provides a service that is worth something to anyone who uses it. If that wasn't true, then why use it? Since we do use it, and it is worth something to the user, then the user should pay for the service.

Not worth spit to me, so I don't. Thanks. To clarify, when they actually provide protection to either party against a royal f***ery from either party, then I'll use them. "secure" in their definition is no more than store-bought encryption. My bank does that already.

It is what it is, a convenient way to send/receive money and as a tool to use when buying selling gear or whatever here on TB or anywhere else. Is it foolproof? No. Does it have its drawbacks? Sure, just like any other form of payment be it cashier check, MO or hte like. When used smartly and sparingly however, it can work well for you as it has for me in the past 8 years.

Some of the responses here really kick up some thoughts regarding the sense of entitlement that youger people have these days. Yeah, I know that's an assumption that I could very well be wrong about, but...

People are either forgetting, or never knew of the days when selling anything on the internet was pretty big ordeal. Not to mention days before the internet. I don't know how long paypal has been around, but I can tell ya that in the nineties if you wanted to sell your music (or anything) it would cost you a whole lot more in money and effort than paypal's fees, however limited you complain their protection is.

And last I saw, gifts weren't charged any fee. Not sure why bassbrad thinks there is.

It depends on how you fund the gift. If it's from a paypal balance or a bank transfer then it's free. If you use a cc then there is a fee.

Paypal provides a valuable service but their fees can be annoying. It would be nice to see a little competition in this market.

Joe, there's no sense of entitlement issue here. I gladly pay a fee for a service I feel warrants it. But in this case, there is a trust issue and a "way they conduct(ed) themselves" issue I take exception to that I don't feel I need to justify here. I don't use them, but that does not entitle someone else here (not necessarily you) to call me out on it like I am out to smite them, or I am cheap, or I am crazy for not recognizing their awesomeness.

What makes you think he was talking about you? :eyebrow:

There's a huge difference between your position: "I do not trust Paypal, so I do not use Paypal, and therefore do not pay them anything"; and the OP's position: "I do use Paypal but I don't want to pay for the service".
