pbass neck question

That's what I thought. The reason I asked is Steve Harris is my favorite bass player, and I've always read he always played the same early 70s pbass. I watched one of the concerts the other night and noticed the truss rod adjustment at the headstock. I guess he had fender specially make him a neck to his specs. His Sig model has the headstock adjustment too.

I always liked the old style plastic Yamaha BB truss rod routes; they make adjusting the truss rod easier at the heel of the neck.

When I was having my Warmoth basses put together, I ordered a couple of the routes from Yamaha and my builder put them in.

Are you sure it was at the headstock?
The reason I ask is: I have a mid-80's Japanese Fender P and it has what appears to be a truss rod access at the headstock, but it is really at the heel.
I've seen others like this as well.

You might just be seeing the walnut plug at the headstock. The truss rod adjuster is still at the heel.

Fender used a "Bullet" truss rod during the 1970s that was adjusted at the headstock. Not all features made it to every instrument. I do know that the 70's Jazz basses were adjusted at the headstock, but would have to find a photo of a 70s Precision. These truss rods were easily seen, as they appeared to be a silver "bullet" coming out of the headstock.

But that was only on the Jazz Bass and Telecaster Bass.
The Precision was still at the butt of the neck (50's -70's).

Yup. The only US Fender Precisions that had truss rod adjustment at the headstock that I can think of at the moment were The American Series in the early 90s, and the early Highway One series.

You're definately seeing the walnut plug on the Steve Harris basses. The later 70's Fender P's (which Steve uses and his signature models are based on) had the plugs.

I think this SNsucks is right.

Just remember that Steve Harris brings more than one bass on tour. I've (fairly) recently seens two white ones, a red, plus the black/white chess (all maple necks).

He prefers his heavy 70's p bass, but I would guess he's had a few neck replacements during the years.
