Peavey 2x15 replacement speaker question

Given your knowledge, skill level and level of commitment, I'm thinking the previously mentioned Peavey Black Widows would be your best bet. Or the Scorpions. Physically, I think they would be a drop-in replacement, but I'm not all that knowledgeable about it, so you'd want to verify that. Replace both drivers -- if you don't, you'll probably be replacing the other one soon enough.

A pic of the cab in question might elicit some other info about fitting the different drivers -- I doubt it's as intense as has been indicated, but I guess that is a possibility. Do you know how to remove the grill?

I can definitely remove the grill and take a picture tomorrow!

Yeah, I'm not really that knowledgable about speakers, electronics, etc but I've just used this cab for years and love how it sounded and how loud it was. I'm not really picky or particular. I'm going on tour in a couple weeks and wanted to be able to have it working again!

Nobody mentioned modifying your cabinet, just needing to measure it.

It's really simple. Take the speaker back out. Snap a few pics. Use a tape measure to get the requested measurements. Post the info and let the knowledgeable people do their thing.

I think that Peavey made an "updated", more powerful speaker that was based on the Black Widow technology, I think it was a CU-CP. Check the math.

Took the speakers out and measured the inside! The ports are divided in half and each port measures:
11.5" deep 9.75" to the studs
18.5" high
24" wide

also just heard back from eminence and they recommended the Delta 15LFA. But they didn't have any info on the speakers I have because their database only goes back to 1989…

I'm not sure I'm following you. Are you saying that there are two individual internal compartments, each of which is 11.5" deep x 18.5" high x 24" wide? If so, we still need the dimensions of the ports or vents -- the triangular thingies. We need the height and width of that opening (don't need the hypotenuse) and, if there are ducts behind those openings, we would want the length of the duct from the baffle board to the end of it. The two vents will be identical, so you only need to measure one.

Yes to everything in your first question!

I missed that I needed a measurement of the triangular ports I'll have to get those next time I'm back at the practice space! No ducts behind those openings though.

Looking back at your original posting. "One of the speakers blew"...
Since you had one recently re-coned, is having the other one repaired also a possibility?

Is the voice coil open? Shorted (less likely), or otherwise what is blown?
I'd think that the place that re-coned for you could fix other issues?

When original parts (and even the specs) are not available, it's not going to be the same. It will make noise and it may even be an improvement, but no way to know.

Uhmm... the dust caps on the two drivers are obviously different diameters. I'm with @Old Garage-Bander, the blown one is a candidate for a trip to the same re-cone shop that did the last one. Then they'd at least match. Or at least it would be the most cost-effective solution.

I can see where re-coning would change performance. New cone, maybe some differences in the design? Or just not broken in, if that's a thing? I'm sure I'm oversimplifying it.

We've discovered that the OP has had one speaker re-coned, and may need work (including a re-cone) on the other?) But he still liked how the cabinet sounded even with an original speaker and a re-coned one.

My thought was get the blown speaker repaired and even if that meant re-coning it, he'd probably be closer to things being what he had before vs putting in something else.

Does that make any sense?

It's actually the reconed speaker that I'm having problems with again; I was considering taking it back to the repair shop I took it to initially but didn't want to keep dealing with issues with this speaker. That's why I was thinking of just getting a couple replacements!

Reconed speaker sounded fine (not the same as it did originally, for sure), but still got the job done.

It's an issue with the moving mass values, the suspension compliance and other more minor things.

I ran the numbers with the enclosure volume being ~6CF total and with a single equivalent port being 6" x 6" square (split diagonally yielding 2 ports of 1/2 the area) and 3/4" thick.

The Delta 15LFA models nicely in this cabinet and will surely outperform what's in there by a proverbial mile. Not even close to the limitations of the original drivers. The only drawback to this project is ultimately the size and weight.

While the Beta 15A will work ok, the mechanical power handling is substantially lower (by 50%) and the system q is higher. The Delta 15LFA is a better choice in this application IMO.

There are different 15" Black Widows, some are good choices, some are pretty poor.
