OK, forget that suggestion. And forget that shop, unless they're willing to make good on the original re-cone, which I very much doubt they would. (If you want to try, offer as evidence that it wasn't being overdriven the fact that the other original driver DIDN'T blow up and is still working fine.)
And in case it isn't clear, just because a speaker has been reconed doesn't mean that the new parts have a performance that is in any way similar to the original speaker -- it's very much dependent on the quality and the parameters of the new parts. Many recone kits are merely parts that fit, not parts that match the original performance. This is why we rail so much in these pages about the availability (or lack thereof) of OEM rebuild kits for vintage drivers.
I think the best option at this point is the Deltas -- and as @agedhorse notes, the performance is likely to be considerably better than what you had.
