Still wondering if this beast will deliver at 8 ohms and not go out in smoke.
Like all tube power amps, the Alphabass was designed to run cabinets of specific impedances, in this instance 4 and 2 Ohms. 8 Ohms is outside of its official design envelope as the OT only has taps for 4 and 2. That said, I don't think it's likely that running this amp at 8 Ohms will cause any damage to the amp and when I had mine I did run it at 8 Ohms frequently with no issues. I'd hazard that Peavey probably designed the amp and OT to be tolerant of that much of an impedance mismatch but it's worth knowing that 8 Ohms is indeed outside of its official specs. You can expect it to deliver slightly less power at 8 than at 4 or 2 but I doubt it's enough to be audible.
I had one in the early 90s and while it sounded good, I found it to be a bit anemic power-wise even with a 410TX and a 115BW cabinet. My tastes skewed towards scooped mids in those days so I probably didn't give it a really fair shake.
