Thanks big time for the Cirrus Info!

I have a 1996 Peavey Axcelerator 5 string that has VFL pickups. The bridge pickup started making noise. I found another that had come from another Peavey. Although it looked identical, it was much darker than my original. I was about to route my Axcelerator for the wider Cirrus pickups, when I found a used pair of the 4 string sized VFL’s that the Axcelerator used. Back in business.

Preamps…I always had trouble with the low B on my Axcelerator since I bought it. Adjusting the pickup did not remedy the problem. I lived with the issue until a few short years ago when I replaced the stock Peavey preamp with a three band, Artec Mt-3 preamp…a preamp I rather like. Wow! The low B came alive. Apparently the stock preamp has a HPF in it that was rolling off the lowest end. Now my Axcelerator is like a new bass…with those wonderful pickups.

I don't believe the new Cirrus uses the same preamp. It was mentioned that the pickups are the VFL's but in a standard shell. Not the radius type they used to use. Still, I would never pay $3k for one. I'd search for an original old school build.

By the way all... these recommendations are exactly why I like coming to talkbass.... not only for the good advice, but to imagine how nice it would be to own 4 cirrus's

I lucked out and picked up 2 of them really cheap in 2019. I was also just on thr Carl Thompson thread reading a post from a guy with 2 Carl Thompson 5-string. I'm trying to imagine what its like to even have one...

If the preamp is dead, it's worth upgrading to a system with better mids. I'm still kicking myself for not buying extra Millennium preamps. If you set the EQ flat, I'm sure most preamps are fine. Also kicking myself for not ordering a nice fretted and fretless 6 string Cirrus........
