Peavey Fury Refret Advice? (Ski Jump Neck)

Would it make sense to refret a 90's maple Peavey Fury neck (in part) to resolve a ski jump issue?

I leveled and crowned the frets, which helped a lot and it plays fine, but the frets are pretty flat now.

I've admittedly been looking for a reason to try my first refret and this bass seems like a good candidate.

  • Any recommendations as to what material, type and size of frets/tang would be a fit for this bass? I have no idea what size the current stock frets are, either. Googled around a bit but didn't find anything- I'm sure it's out there somewhere...
  • Are taller frets better to deal with a ski jump at the highest frets? How tall is "too tall"?

  • Anything other maintenance/repair that is good to do if/once the frets are off? (I'd guess I could sand the fretboard to flatten the jump, but I really don't love the idea of refinishing the board if it can be avoided...)

I am not sure why the frets would be flat if you re-crowned them. Do you mean they are low? If it plays ok I would wait. In general a regret alone won't solve a ski jump. You have to level the fretboard and regret. I would not try and do a spot level and partial regret in this case.

Thanks. The higher frets didn't have enough material left for my Z file to perfectly crown them so they are kind of flat. That said I could probably just hit them with a regular file and round them a bit better.

HA! It is indeed the dusty end. Good to hear from you CM.

My thinking is that if the ski slope on this thing is < maybe 50% of a new fret height I might be able to really get the Fury playing perfectly, while learning to refret in the process?

That said, @RSBBass has a good point in that the bass plays pretty darn well now, and I'd be doing this more for the project than out of need. Maybe I need to find a real bottom of the barrel instrument to do this on instead- something like the bass equivalent of the Vanderbilt football program. Actually, I don't think any basses are that bad.

Do you want to refret one of mine?

I bought a parts bass a few years back with a defretted MIM neck. Looks like putty in it.

I pulled it immediately and bolted on a maple/maple. Never played a note on it.

Excellent practice fodder. I have wire and a bender I could send with it.
