Peavey IPR Users - How is this amp working out?

I wonder if the high sensitivity has anything to do with it?
Being so easy to clip it and put it into protect mode. Might need a limiter before it if you aren't too careful with gain staging.
 
Mark was using an upright bass. I use a hpf to protect my speakers more than anything else.

Even then, an upright bass does not thump like a mic'ed bass drum. If it is going into clip/protect mode, then I would understand that.
Yes, the sensitivity is low with this amp, but if it's going into clip/protect mode then it's not powerful enough for your needs. I wouldn't diss the amp in that case.

You know, this could be the issue. I was trying an old GK amp as a preamp (sounded great!), and I had to crank it up quite a bit. I have not had this issue with other preamps.
 
So if this amp shuts down during volume blasts, etc., what's it good for? I know bands that run subs through the 1600 with a lot of bass drum pumping though them. I've heard them. This should not be an issue with this amp. IMO, this is not normal.
I think there must be an issue with some of these 1600's then. There is no way you should need to run a HPF to use an IPR1600 with a bass guitar.

If I'm speaking out of school here someone please correct me, but I think the major issue at play here is that this is a piece of component gear. It's not a PA, it's not a bass amp, it's a stand alone power amp. When it comes to complete amps for a specific application, gain staging is key to ideal performance and they've been designed with that in mind. When you're using components, the burden of getting all that correct falls on the user. That includes issues of input sensitivity and impedance of the power amp, output impedance and voltage of the preamp, what speakers you're running into, what bass you're using, the settings you use, how much headroom you're giving yourself, if the power you're applying is suitable for the application and probably more issues I'm overlooking all come in to play with how efficient and effective the performance of the whole package will be. You can say "well, this doesn't do what it's supposed to do" and there may be instances where that's undoubtedly true, when there's a defect covered under warranty and it needs to be repaired or replaced, but the manufacturer can't anticipate all the different configurations of gear you may use, how you'll use them and guarantee it will work as desired in every instance. Once again, it's a component piece of gear, so there's a certain amount of technical and operation knowledge necessary to use it properly for the best result. If it were a complete, self contained bass amp and did the same thing, it would be a valid and pretty major complaint.

An appropriate analogy may be if you were a very experienced race car driver and a reasonably good mechanic, but you tried to build a high performance automobile from scratch. There's a lot of potential gaps in knowledge of design and implementation of all those parts to get something that does what you want effectively and efficiently. Sorting out a problem as being a flaw in a part vs an inappropriate or unideal application could be a little complicated. It's not an absolute refutation of any problems with the part, it's just something to consider as part of the bigger picture.

I would also like to see Peavey take the IPR DSP line, boil it down and give us a mono power amp for bass use. Would be killer IMHO.

Actually, the idea of having a stereo amp with DSP settings on both channel for HP/LP would be a great way to bi-amp the way a rig should be bi-amped. Plus, the DSP has equalization, which would be a composite of HP/LP or both channels and if someone knows how to use an RTA, they would be able to minimize acoustical problems a lot faster. Anyone who tries to EQ their rig by ear is doing it the hard way.
 
I've had similar problems.
In my case the power cord wasn't fitting tightly into the back of amp.
Why don't manufacturers use PowerCon connectors?

I'm not sure CE would allow it. If a manufacturer wants to sell their goods around the world, CE certification is important. It's the main reason Klipsch bought Jamo and some other companies- they wanted CE and these companies already had it, so it was much easier to just buy and have it. IEC power cords can be held fast using a power cord retainer- google it.

IMO, this is more likely to be an input sensitivity issue than an output issue. It could be perfectly normal, depending on how the front-end of the amp is being driven. The bass drum pumping that you're referring to is probably coming through a pretty well-matched board---not through a bass amp front-end or poorly-matched preamp.
 
I would bet that all of the amps that shut down didn't have the input sensitivity set correctly. This isn't something that can be set by ear, either. They would be smart to put an input level indicator that's green when below a threshold, yellow in a narrow window and red when the correct sensitivity has been exceeded.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find that a slapped upright---especially one with a pickup---will put out a greater transient spike than a mic'ed bass drum.

It's kinda freaky...I think the piezo has a lot to do with it as well...just a very strong spiked signal
 
When I used your rig in the UK it was that Peavey amp, wasn't it? Man, I bought an IPR3000 and when I'd slap really loud notes on upright, it would shut down...tried it with different basses...real bummer...LOVED the sound:hmm:

Mark, the Peavey amp was in the headcase with the HPF but you didn't use them. We tried to but something did not match up so reverted to your GK.

I suspect that a lot of the shutting down problems could be power feed related. If the voltage drops for any reason (e.g. crappy power leads or extension cables) then the amp goes into standby and needs the power button pressing to bring it back up again.

After I had trouble with mine I went through all my IEC cords to see which fitted the best (and threw out a load of old worn ones). That one is reserved for the IPR. I regularly go through all our band electrics and check them. I had the trouble at our practice place and I haven't checked the electrics in there for years, maybe I should!

Hah! Now I remember, I used a rented GK 1001rb. I wish we had audio/video of that day to add to any "Love a 410 on top of a 115" thread :)

I regularly run mine with the clip light just lighting (all night) with no problems.

At full power, even on transients, they are going to draw a lot of current so good power feed with lots of current capacity is probably vital for reliable operation.

If anyone has one that tends to shutdown it would be worth trying to run it on short power cords with adequate current carrying capacity and see if that improves matters.

Neutrik says that the PowerCon connectors are UL and cUL recognized, VDE certified and SEV approved. I won't pretend to know what that means, but it sure seems that they'd meet CE requirements.

Maybe not, though, because some idiot could disassemble the housing, unscrew the clamps and touch the bare wires.......
