Peavey MegaBass Club

When we moved to Ontario in '97, I took my rig with me. MB head in SBK case, and 1516 cab, on the bus. They weighed the cab @ 75lbs. I was concerned about the cabs arrival, as, while the local carrier (SMT) had a 80lb limit, I was told the national carrier (Greyhound) had a 50lb limit. Everything made it to Trenton,ON at the same time. That cab came in real handy as a table/chair in the first few days after getting there. :D

Wow, I could have sworn the 1516 was over 100lbs. 75lbs. is much lighter than I remembered those cabs. Now I find myself wanting a pair, LOL!

I sold those cabs a while ago; they were actually really heavy. I over built them with marine-grade plywood. The drivers were all Eminence. The 1x15 was nice; I liked it as much as my old Mesa/Boogie Diesel, the cab that inspired it (and, again, is basically a TL606). Yes, I've always set the crossover at 200Hz on the Mega. I have one at the rehearsal space with an old Peavey 1810; talk about overkill for practice! We've taken it to a couple of gigs, but my neo cabs are light and fit in the trunk so they make the trip easy.

I too have gone neo. SWR Golights purchased solely because I got a ridiculous deal on them. 2x10 and 1x15 that sound not so great together full range, but bi-amped with my Peavey preamps they sound great. Eventually the 1x15 will be replaced by a 4x10 so I will have 2x10/4x10/6x10 modularity without bi-amping. I must admit I miss my high-end being handled by Scorpions though. I'm not too fond of tweeters.

Ok, since this thread has gotten some additional traffic lately, I wonder if anybody wants a number. You don't have to currently own a Mega: just holler if you've owned one in the past and want a number.

I'd be honored to take a number. Thanks Steve.

Hi i thought i might put down my Peavey Megabass story..i started useing Peavey gear here in Oz in 1983 with a Combo 300..then in 1985 a Peavey MKIV which in Oz became a ''industry standard bass amp'' with lots of top Aussie bands using them...usually with EV TL 15 cabs rather than BW 15 cab which is what i used all thru the 80s 90s playing in varous bands

Than in late 80s Peavey put out the Megabass..problem i couldnt afford one..they cost 2500A here..the Peavey MK IV in Oz cost about 1300A..i think the US price was 499US!!!..so we got ripped off gear wise down here like you couldnt imagine...anyway in the mid 90s i managed to get a 1516 cab which was ok full range..but sounded a lot better bi amped with the MKIV i can imagine what it could have sounded with the Megabass...recently i finally upgraded last year after all these years to GB Stramliner 600 and GK 212II which is albsolutely brilliant set up...sounds great and very light and portable..ive been reading this thread ever since it started recently and thought. i might check the OZ Eaby now and then to see if they come up and i did..a top conditon one for $299A...and id just disposed to my 1516..lol..so i let i go and it passed in with no bids..bugger..lol

Great story... shipping from US is probably high, but there's a Mega on the Guitar Center used site for $99 USD right now. I'm tempted to grab it, but that would be too much... LOL

Hi, anybody still here? I'd like a number. I've had my megabass since I bought it used back in the late 80's. For a lot of years it was my workhorse but a couple of years ago it was acting up so I semi-retired it and rotated between my Eden Wt330 and Ampeg PF500 amps. I did take it in to have repairs done but the tech said it just needed a good cleaning. Still I just reserved it as a backup amp. Last night I brought it out to a gig because the peavey 1820 cab my guitard/BL insisted I use (long story) had developed a problem with the internal crossover. It was either use just the 18 (mud), or the 2 10's (scorpions, ugh!), or use both at full range (mismatched speakers, not so good) with my other amps, or bring the megabass. I had forgotten how much power this thing had! It sounded pretty darn good and behaved itself the whole night. I just may have to use it more often. Here's a pic of me with the megabass when I brought it out for S&G's at another show (after a request by the BL).

Wookieonbass, you are #9. I have a mega+1810 rig that I leave at the drummer's house. My crossover died, too. Be careful--the crossover fried an amp of mine. I easily rewired the thing for use with the mega. The 18" is 4 ohms and the pair of 10" are also 4. Perfect for bi-amp with the mega. Yes, the MegaBass is one loud bass head.

Scored a ProBass 1000 preamp from a TBer. I think everyone on this thread knows that's the preamp section of the Mega in a separate unit. I'd been eyeing the things on eBay, GC used, craigslist, etc. for years. Thefre was always a reason I didn't pull the trigger. Then I saw this one on TB in mint condition and I had to go for it.

It's hooked into an ancient CS-800 power amp and it really sings. All tone controls flat, pure transparent tone. It sounds great.

Unfortunately, do not have a pic of it.
I used it in bi-amp mode with Gallien Kruger Cabs, 212 and 115.
It proved to be very reliable and well built, after all those years, the fan is all I needed to repair on it.
Bought it used in 1995 and paid 600$ with the cabs and wiring included, always was satisfied, although I preferred a lot of other amps that I owned too. :)

this is my MEGABASS purchased in 1989 its very special to me as my decision to purchase it was on the advise of a great man Rudy Sarzo he was at the music store doing a promotion and I asked him what to purchase and he said with out a doubt this peavey megabass will last you forever and it a great amp. but this has been a trying week and after nearly 25 years of service my incredible stupidity blew her up this week I lost channel one completely and channel 2 is giving massive overdrive if I even try to turn the the volume up. so I delivered her to a great group of amp Doctors who advised me "its a megabass its American made its worth trying to save" so I should know in 7-10 days what the verdict is. pray for her and can I have a number first pic is from 1989 and the second is from 2013
thank you

well after nearly 20 days at the repair shop im told they cant fix it because they cant get a complete set of schematics from peavey to check all the circuits and levels....and that if I wanted it fixed it would be at least another 200.00 to continue..I feel as though I was scammed at this point but its not worth 200+ to get it fixed at this point since im already 80.00 in for the first hour of repair.....disparaged I guess its time to put and end to it...

There is a Peavey Megabass at my local GC for $75... Should I snag it? I don't know much about them. But assuming I could run it full range with each power output to half of my Ampeg 8x10 it could be a cool amp for the price?

Yes, you can run both sides full range.

I bought one of my MegaBass heads from a guy who used it to drive an Ampeg 8x10, and I've heard them driven with this head. Each side of the Mega can run a load down to 4 ohms, making it a super versatile head. Not sure it's the right phrase, but some people called the MegaBass the "poor man's SVT" back in the day. I actually prefer the Mega, but that's me.

But for $75, you should try. They sell online for 2x that, so if you don't like it, you can get rid of it. It's a great backup head, though, because it can do so many things.
