Steve - I read your email a little more carefully. You're saying remove the crossover because the one on your 1810 fried an amp. Good advice.

Yes and no. The internal crossover is what allows you to use the cab "full range" (e.g. sending one full-range signal into the cab). That crossover sends lows to the 18" and highs to the 10" speakers. I think the internal crossover is set at 500hz. Something inside the crossover keeps it a 4 ohm cabinet when used that way.
With the crossover out, I essentially have two cabinets in one box: a 2x10 and a single 18 (4 ohms each). I cross over at about 200hz, which sounds better to me. You can run these full range, but the sound is not great to my ears. The 18" sounds like crap when using the full-range signal, and the 10s are weak. It sounds much better bi-amped.
And yeah, the thing is a tank. I put wheels on mine. It does fit in the back seat of a Chevy Impala, though!

Found a second MegaBass locally for $120. It's not as cosmetically clean as my main amp, but it works great. I'm gonna leave it at the drummer's house for a shlep-free practice.

Way to go! Mine literally looks like it sat at the bottom of a pond for a few months. But it works great.
I traded a MegaBass for an SWR SM-400 (plus some cash) in the 90's. Never had a problem with the Mega, but the SWR went back to the mothership once and never quite sounded right to me. I wish I had kept the Mega. The guy I sold it to, ran two Megas and two 1516 cabs in stereo.
I ran across a Mega last year at an estate sale, but I needed a small practice amp and picked up a Peavey MicroBass instead.

I'd be tempted if I didn't alreayd have 2. One of mine is like yours--clean and recently refurb'd by Peavey (you inspired me to do that, MNAirHead). I used it on a gig last night where most of my signal was going FOH, but I loved having the rig there with me.

I used to own one, years ago. Had it on top of a Hartke 1 x15, 4x10 stack. I was never satisfied with the sound, constantly fiddling with the controls. I never tried the amp or the speakers with any other setup. I always wondered if it was the amp or the speakers...judging from the comments here, it was the speakers.
Ah yes, the Will Lee rig of the late 80's. The Hartkes are a love 'em or hate 'em thing. I guess they didn't do it for you.
Can't be sure. As biased as I am, it's possible folks would not like the tone of this amp. That said, it is very transparent. I've read that it was basically a PA amp design. What I have always loved about this amp is the versatility and power. I've said it before: each of the 200w amps inside this is significantly louder than just about any amp I have used. My current band does medium-sized bars, and I always have to use the input pad to quiet the thing down. I've taken to using the Low-Z (XLR) input to futher tame the beast. But you can basically do anything with it: bi-amp with two cabs; run one cab full-range; run two cabs full-range; whatever.
Since I now have 3 to play around with, I have toyed with the idea of modding one so that it can send full-range signal to one cab and low-pass signal to a second (kind of a parallel sub rig idea). Seems like this would be a great head to drive fEarful cabs.
Again, this is not a micro head. It's heavy, especially in a rack case. But a versatile, powerful, great-sounding bass head that can be picked up for $100 is a beautiful thing indeed.

Ive got that ad too somewhere...and from memory those bass cabs in the background of the Tony Montana ad are 1516.. the full range cabs designed for the Megabass amp
