I turned it down to around "2" and it was still very present. I was running a 4 ohm cab out of one side... 400 watt rating is ridiculously conservative.
I'm pretty sure if you plug into only one of the two channels it automatically bridges and you get 400 watts. Although I think you also have to hit the push button on the front that tells the unit that you are only using one output. Check the owner's manual. Or I will and post.
I had a feeling Steve was going to weigh in on this one. I certainly cannot give the full explanation for why and how this works, but in the 'post gain' section of the amp, you engage the small square button so that the amp works 'full range'.
