Peavey MiniMega 1000

They were pounding the crap out of it all day in the desert sun in Tempe last Saturday, I mean really pounding it with 6 and 7 string bass guitars, no whole notes but a lot of pounding. No problem holding up that day.

I believe this amp is rated at 700W into 8
And that's a nice, stout number. Plenty to drive my 8 Ohm MAS 112 with headroom to spare.

I've got no immediate need for a sub 4 Ohm head, but I've given thought to a few different big cab + small cab setups, with the cabs being 4 and 8 Ohms, respectively. The ability to handle a 2.7 Ohm load would offer more flexibility that way.

Not to take anything away from this head - if it delivers in full on its promise, it'll be an amazing buy. Just offering my two cents on what I'd like to see in a head.

Question for Bobby: is there any type of built-in high-pass filtering?

No. That was typical of pretty much all Peavey bass amps made over the past few decades, but I did not use it in the Mini Mega for various reasons.

Just speaking for myself, that's a very good thing. I have an fDeck which lets ME determine where to high pass. Too many class D amps just sound thin to me
 
How do you handle the cooling on this amp? I've noticed a lot of the small heads use tiny little fans that are amazingly loud when they kick on (GK MB800 and Aguilar tone hammer 500 for example). On the other hand the old Genz Benz Streamliner 900 has a whisper quiet fan and no electrical noise floor that I can hear. Some people say you shouldn't use a powerful amp for home practice if the noise is a problem there, but I call BS on that. I like to get to know my amp at home and a loud fan drives me nuts. A true variable speed fan would eliminate the problem and allow the amp to be cooled properly at gig volumes. Genz seems to have done something very right with the airflow on the streamliners.

LOL! Obviously I was only joking. Probably sort of late in the game to consider new stuff for this release. My Kilobass has High & Low Shelving if that's what was meant by the High-Pass Filtering. Personally, I haven't found the need to dabble with it much but freely admit that my requirements are most likely a lot less than many others.

Nope. HPF is different from shelving controls. Shelving is EQ that has a 'wide Q', covering a fair amount of frequency range. High Pass filtering is all attenuation to filter out the lows below a certain frequency threshold.

It would be like having half of a crossover in the amp. So it would provide 'Xdb' of attenuation per octave starting at 'Yhz'.

There is a special version of DDT in there that's active all the time, which for those who don't know is Peavey's proprietary limiting scheme that's been around since the 70's in one form or another. The idea is that instead of limiting at a specific fixed signal level, the limiter senses the onset of clipping, which doesn't always happen at the same level depending on several factors.

How do you handle the cooling on this amp?

The temp sensing and fan speed are handled digitally, and the fan speed is continuously variable. Interestingly enough, the three major applications of the module so far: bass amp, powered speaker, powered mixer, each wanted different thermal management mapping based on the desired level of fan noise, various chassis' shapes and sizes, PCB mounting orientations, fan locations, and typical signal types per application. Having a digital system means that it's possible to try and predict what's going to happen by monitoring temp variations, and it's relatively easy for us to optimize / customize the cooling per application and flash accordingly. Anyway, I'm interested to see what people think about the fan noise.

HPF in this case is referring to infrasonic filtering, or in other words filtering out lows that are just below or barely within the audio range. There's an easy way to tell if an amp has it. Grab a bass string and shake it back and forth over a pickup while you watch your speaker cones. If you see the speakers mimic your actions, the amp does not have an infrasonic filter.

Indeed, a LOT of thought and effort went into this, and the specific technology as it applies to this application is patented because of how much time and effort was involved.

Your Kosmos-C, that's the one that adds psuedo-bass right?
Does it also reduce actual subbass or simply increase upper bass harmonics relative to the lows it's synthesizing?

As a matter of course how do both Kosmos' interact with the bass EQ knob?
Can you talk Hz about these?
What's the effect of using both together?
Pointless, magic, paradox?
How does the signal routing go are they before effects loop, parallel to each other, etc?
