if the 20's were hum-free there'd be absolutely no stopping them, one of THE BEST basses ever made.
they are SO different from the 40s they shouldn't even be T family, I'd love to try a 45, but am leery since I regard my beautiful burst T-40 as worth 0 but as a stunning wall hanger over-powered by a tone blanket and baked-in meh sound. one of the worst basses ever made lol or I got a real weirdo. of course it was my most expensive...

I'm afraid you "got a real weirdo". There are dozens of threads here about the T-40, many of which praise the almost infinite variety of tones available from this instrument, due to the design and unique architecture of the switching. I HAVE to believe that yours must have problems if your best evaluation of the tone is "meh". Please elaborate?

Fairly new to TB, but I’ve had this ‘83 T-20 in my life for well over a decade! It was at my high school, then in my dad’s possession, and I’ve since carted it around. The pandemic inspired me to finally get my skills to a better place than where I’ve been since high school pep band, and that involved finally having this get some much-deserved TLC and strings. Got some Fender flats on for now and it’s a fun one.

Question for the group.. I have been a very long time owner of my Peavey T-20FL. Bought mine new in 1983. I just picked up another one. However, it has a brown chainsaw case. I have never seen a brown case for a T-20. Anyone know anything about these? I have had 4 or 5 of these over the years. I would really like to find a 1984 in the Frost Blue body (toured with one for a couple years in a country band playing 6 nights a week). Anyone??? Thanks
I found a green T20 in a pawn shop today, it is $300 but seller will take $200 for it. It is missing a knob but I can buy one for $60 on reverb.
Does it worth it? Neck feels ok and needs a setup. Flat strings are decent.
Color is weird, green is not my fav color but I cant find any other green online and this really looks like a factory finish. Everything looks original.
I might go back and buy it, but Im not sure if I will love it. I play P and J basses.

I have never come across one in that color, it looks nicely done if it is a refin. I like the grain. The board looks kinda rough? or is it just the pics? Needs a bunch of TLC but I'd probably buy it...it's what I do. Lol
It should have a great beefy P sound and to me the integrated thumb rest puts me right in the sweet spot. Wider at the nut like a P neck. I really like mine.

I'm with @Bleecker it looks like a nicely done refinish. $200 you can't go wrong. You might be able to get a knob from someone here on TB for less than $60.
@kodiakblair might have a catalog that might show that as a real finish, but the more I look at it it looks like a refinish.

Factory finishes were natural, sunfire red, sonic blue and a few burst. WTH has somebody did with the fretboard ,looks like lacquer on rosewood ?
Hmmm... Did they even make them with a rosewood fretboard, thought all T-20's were maple. Maybe a rare bird? At $200 I'd be all over that and I already have one.
Rosewood would be a $25 price hike on a $200 bass , 12 week wait if the store didn't have one in stock.
Buyer would have to be serious about wanting RW
Lacquer on rosewood is not a good sign , folk oil rosewood. TRC is squint , somebody has been tampering. Refin .
What other DIY delights have previous owners experimented with ?
Still $200 is a decent price and sand paper will right most wrongs. Guy in Canada sell 3D printed knobs on eBay ; $14 set of 4. Sell the original knob for $40
Go for it. Once it is up and running the bass will make you smile. I still smile every time I play my T-20. It just has something in the sound that makes you want to play it. You only live once, make it a good ride!
Just found the Peavey T20 Club! Wasn't aware of a T20 Club? Just acquired this 83 T20. It is the sunfire red finish,nice clean neck,and in decent shape. Didn't come with the case,but got one lined up if seller and I can agree on meeting up and buying from him. Posted it on the US Peavey Club. Need a setup and getting the strings lower for way I prefer. Really like the looks of the T20's.
