Peavey T-40 Club Part 2

My stepdaughter helped out by taking pictures of pictures for me.
Here are 2 shots of my 1st T-40. The pics are from circa 1983.

IMHO thats a sienna burst but I cant be sure. Its also impossible to see but there is a black thumbrest on the pickguard. For the life of me I cant remember if it was glued onto the PG or if it was screwed into the body.

I bought my '80 new, and it came with a screw-in thumb rest in the case with the rest of the candy. I figgered if it came with the bass, I ought to screw it in. I never anchor my thumb, so it was a waste of two holes into an otherwise pristine body.

Unless the lighting is bad in the original photo, that's a 3TS. I say that because the sienna is more of a light brown towards the edges, that one seems to fade to black.

The lighting IS pretty bad in the original pic and taking a pic of a pic doesnt exactly help things much! :o

My dad used to take the pictures from the stairs outside my room. I'd be in there practicing and he'd come up the stairs, camera in hand and take couple pictures through the doorway. My room didnt have great lighting so he'd usually end up using the flash.

Funny thing is, until I rediscovered these pics, I always though I had a natural/maple. Funny how the mind plays tricks on you!
But thats the only bass I had wrong as far as color is concerned, I was 100% accurate on the colors of all my other former basses.

I did use the thumbrest-you can almost see me using it in these 2 shots. But over the years, I realized I prefer to anchor my thumb on the pickup mount and I normally play over the bridge pickup.

UPDATE on my new to me T-40: I am waiting for my repairs guy to get the bass back to me. He ordered a switch which he said "will look bad ass, like the original".

I have a set of Rotosounds waiting for her when she gets back. I will shoot nice photos of my T-40. I haven't given her an official "NBD", because she was only in the house two days before she went to the shop.

I'm excited to get her back.

Yep- I DO still have that strap. I bought it right after I got that bass. I've had that strap longer than any other item of "gear" ever. 27 years and counting!

My dad took pictures of me every so often between 83 and about 91 or 92. That strap is in a ton of those pictures.
In fact, I just posted another pic in a Charvel thread and there's the lightning bolt strap holding my old Firecrackle Red Charvel!

Rotos? Unusual and interesting string choice. One thing for sure-that'll help you get the Ric sound!!

Nah...yer right...it's 1-5/8". I just measured it. :o I think it's the same size as modern P-basses. It's the vintage ones that are 1-3/4"

I have been using Rotosound Swingbass 66 since I was a teenager. Not so much because anyone endorses them... but because I like them. I have tried others, but for my long scale basses with roundwounds- Roto's are for me.

I'm liking the look of the sunburst T-40s with the earlier style pickups and rosewood neck. How do they compare soundwise to a P or J?

It looks to me like the front pickup is forward of either a P or J pickup, so I'm guessing it's going to be fat sounding with lots of bass. And the bridge pickup looks like it might be closer to the bridge than a J's. That makes me think it would sound pretty plucky and bright.

Overall, are the available tones pretty unique to the T-40 or can you get them with a P and a J (I have both)?

I am super pumped to be back in the T40 club (though unofficially--I don't need a number or anything). I just picked this guy up today--a very clean 1979!

This is my fourth one, as I have had to sell my previous three T40s for financial reasons. I was a little worried that the neck would be tweaked because he only had two strings on it, and I had owned a T20 that was a ski jump with a maxed truss rod. This one moves nice and easy. I cleaned it up, threw on some rounds I had in the house (I think a set of chromes may be in my future), did a quick set up--it plays great! So nice in fact that I will be taking it to my gig tonight!

If I told you what I paid for it you would throw up with jealousy....
