Peavey T-40 Club Part 2

I went to pick up my kid at school. When I came home I watched the UPS guy THROW my bass onto my front porch. I was not happy.

No damage done, but I was angry.

This specimen T-40 is a 1982, according to the serial number matrix supplied by the good ENGINE.

First impression: Sounds great! Very mid heavy, growly, awesomeness.

However: The phase switch is broken off. It is also shorting out... it seems like it is shorting out the bridge pup. If I futz with it a little, it seems to help. Obviously needs replacement.

The bridge volume pup needs replacement. No big deal, the bass is 29 years old.

Action is high. I tried some small adjustments, but the "neck tilt" screw is new to me and is slowing me down. It is dark in my studio now (hence the bad pic... I'll post better tomorrow) so I will continue the setup adjustments later.

The neck appears to be not sitting in the pocket correctly. There is a gap between the body and the neck on the treble side. Tilt screw issue? Not sure.

The wood in the neck looks nice too. I'll shoot some daylight pics tomorrow.

I am not going to mess with the wiring on this one. I'm going to take it to my repair guy. I took a look at the schematic and it outside my comfort level. While he has it on the bench I am going to have him run a setup. I normally set up my own basses, but if I am putting it in the shop anyway...

Did T40's come with a metal nut? I am wondering if this is the original nut on mine? I have heard of brass nuts (insert joke here), but never a nickel plated one. If I replace, any reason to stick with a metal nut or should I just go plastic/synthetic?

My '83 has a plastic nut. It may be that '82 was the last year of the metal nut as it was the last year for the little white dots in the pickguard at the tone and volumn controls.

The metal nuts must be better for metal. :D

If it has to be replaced, either would be fine.

The guy I take my basses to is one of the good ones. He asks good questions and will give honest answer. He earned my trust years ago.

I took the bass in tonight. He took one look at it and said "SCORE!". He said the exact same thing... don't touch the nut. He did say that the neck needed some TLC (truss rod adjustment, tilt adjustment). It needs a good set up.

Electronics wise, I told him to check the wiring and make sure that the last guy that had this bass didn't frack it up by rewiring it. Also, I asked him to replace the broken phase switch. I am not particular on the switch as long as it is DPST and works. If he has to drill the pickguard, no big deal.

Otherwise, the bass is in remarkable shape. Seeing it in the shop lights (very bright) really brought out the wood grain.

Hey all!

I'm just wondering if anyone has come across my old T-40.
It was a sunburst finish, maple board. I'm looking at a couple of old pictures and its possible that it could've been a sienna burst. I dont know the year but I do remember it had the older pickups with the covered magnets.
I remember it had an aftermarket black plastic thumbrest attached on the pickguard, kinda between the pickups. It was on the bass when I got it and it was still there when I traded it away.

I traded it in at the now defunct Zinno Music in Waterbury, CT in the mid 80's.

if anyone knows anything about it, contact me via PM. I'd like to see if I could work ouot a deal to get it back.

Hey, kj...you must know that the burst finishes are the most rare, so tracking yours should be a little easier than if it were a natural. If you were able to determine if it was a Sienna vs. 3TS, you're one step closer. The two are very different and easy to tell apart.

Mindgrinder's 83, above, is an excellent example of a 3TS. I have a pretty nice Sienna a page or two back, so...does that jog your memory any?

You guys are lucky, I think I hold one ones, but I'm not sure, few months before I started to play bass so I don't remmember how it is, it used to be my brothers, and he say it was some thing like t40, he gave it to one of ure friend a teenage dude, some week later the electronic was distroyed so u can't fix it with out chance every electronic. I ask if I can get he say yes, but I never got it, but Im happy with my g&l

Post #5 in this thread shows several basses with burst finishes. One of them doesnt go black around the edges- so I'm guessing thats the sienna version?
Then I think my old one was a sienna because I dont notice the finish going so dark around the edge of the body.
I wish the 2 pics I have were up closer.
My dad used to occasionally take pictures of me when I was practicing so I have a kind of slideshow of the basses I owned form roughly 1983 through about 1991. Gotta get them into digital format someday!
That T-40 was the 3rd bass I ever owned. AFAIK, there are no pics of basses 1 & 2 (1= Memphis P & 2= Kramer Duke)

You're right! The second photo showing the three basses with burst finishes are 3TS - Sienna - 3TS. Absolutely beautiful examples of each, I might add. Good luck tracking down your long lost.
