I think those serial numbers are USA Peavey basses in general, not specifically T-40s...
After I posted my question, it sort of occurred to me that might be the case. After my duty crew tomorrow, the bass should be waiting for me. I'll post pics.

The guy I'm trading with says he weighed his T-40 a number of times on the bathrooom scale at it registered right around 10 lbs. Does that sound reasonable? Most I've heard of are 11 - 12 lbs.

11.5 lbs...mine, the SiennaBurst/Rosewood. Bliss, what you'll need are DPDT switches.

Rumor has it, Radio Shack also sells them, but these together are only a little over 20 bucks. There's a cat on eBay, who I don't know, selling the knobs for $12 apiece. There's also a guy on the T-40 forum who is also on TB (Scottpro1969) who had/has some miscellaneous parts for sale.

Thanks! I'm hoping I'm lucky and this thing really is 10 lbs, but I'm ready if it's heavier. Thanks on the switches. Any chance you guys know of a wiring diagram for those switches?

Heh...the last post in that thread is my link to the current home of those files! I didn't even remember that thread!
I just did the trade and it's a 1980. I am going to do the refinish and restore things as much as I can. Are the pickups supposed to have springs under them or foam? I turned the screws to raise the pickups and they don't move at all, so I don't think there's anything under there right now.

The pickups adjust just like a guitar's humbuckers, the screws go through the pickup ring to the pickup with springs in between the pickup and ring. Could be that it was unscrewed so far that the pickup fell off the screw(s)?
That thread (and this one) was instrumental in my decision to pull the trigger on this bass.

That tends to be the way things work around here. We talk bass then we buy bass.
A lot of great tones in that bass just waiting to be let loose on unsuspecting ears.
Well, Gents, I guess a T-40 is not what I'm looking for. The one I traded for is nice enough and does sound good, but it's not my sound. I thought it might be from the sound clips and videos I've heard but this one didn't sound different enough from my current bass to make it worth holding on to. I'm going to sell it to improve my other already really nice bass.
I think I'll try to sell it locally so as not to deal with shipping, but if someone here in the club wants to drop me a line and discuss an offer I'm open!

Try playing it with a pick with both pickups on with vol/tone on full into a cranked Orange AD200 and you might change your mind!

I do like the sound but it's not different enough from what I've already got, and I prefer the playability of my other bass much more.
