Depending on how it balanced on the strap - that is a better look than most T-40 body modifications that I've seen. I wouldn't do it to my T-40 but I'd play it.

HDTVDinner - what are your plans for the body? A faithful restoration? a "creative" one like that ebay bass? a chambered one?

Faithful restoration in all but color. Looking at possibly Trans blue or blueburst. I would love to find a Peavey neck to go on it too, Hoping to get 1.5 nut width. Any one have any solid leads as to what would definitely fit?

I believe the earliest Foundation necks fit, and that they are slimmer than the T-40's, but I can't confirm that.

Hope the grain under the paint is nice, I've never seen one of the solid colors stripped down. I think they're oak instead of ash.

I like the idea of a different neck. I love the tone of the T-40; but I much prefer the neck on my USA Millennium.

I hope the grain underneath the paint will be worthy of a trans or burst finish. If not, maybe a solid Lake Placid Blue would work? It would certainly be unique. Or, take a look at the burgundy and the red finishes on the page below from Part 1 of the T-40 thread - not many were made in these colors and I love the look.

Photos will be there, Planning on using this project as my first Forray into Blogspot, as a step by step report. I have also pondered if there is some okay graining, but not a lot, trying to enhance it by thinning out some black stain, and sanding it down. anyone had any luck with this?

I have done this with mixed results (on furniture, not guitars) using oaks and poplars, but it depends on the quality of the stain. The times I've been cheap, and gone with Valspar or something like that, it's wound up costing me in the end.

There may be some good threads on this in Luthier's Corner.

Hey can I join the T-40 club? I've got this 81-82 sunburst and an 81 natural. Fell in love with the T-40's years ago and just picked these two up in the last year or two.

Thats the route I'm going as well. Wife gets pissed when I drop $400 on an entire working bass. This is not a conversation I'm looking forward to. :crying:

so i payed $300 for mine at a guitar center (i really hate that place), anyway its a 1979 with the plain ash finish. Anyway the condition of it looks brand new, you'd think it the previous owner bought it and threw it in a closet for 30 years. back to business was that price a decent price or how bad was I ripped off?

I'd say a decent price - I paid $300 for the '83 natural/maple pictured below shipped in an inexpensive gig bag. That was here on TB a few years ago. Really nice ones go for over $300 on eBay all the time.

There was a SiennaBurst like mine last year that still had the original film (with instructions) on eBay last year (or maybe 2 years ago) that got bid up $625. :eek:
