Peavey T-40 Club Part 2

I've mentioned this before, but I've often wondered why no one has offered lighter weight replacement bodies...I have half a mind to just make one myself. If my T-40 weighed a few lbs less, I'm not sure if I'd ever play anything else :)

I think the change in tone might be objectionable with a less dense body, but, I could be wrong.

If it turns out well, you could make some serious money selling those puppies.

Some people (have seen some pics around the internets) have taken to routing out a lot of the area under the pickguard since it is so large, or otherwise chambering the body. I know I saw another build using all parts of a normal T-40 except the body, which was custom built smaller and of lighter wood and they mentioned the tone was a little different.

I had once read that Chip Taylor(?), who developed the T-40's felt that the weight had little, if anything to do with the tone. It was just trendy in the late 70's to have really heavy basses. Only one way to find out :)

I took my T-40 to rehearsal a couple of weeks ago, just to be different, and I got through almost four hours with that thing strapped over my shoulder. It was noticeably heavier, but not that bad. I bet mine's about 12-1/2 pounds.

Incidentally, my bandmates loved its tone. I'd mostly been using my Ric 4001 and Fender Jazz Bass, and now they're all over the Peavey.

The T-40 is so versatile. I wish I could handle the weight but I have a bad back. Got one for sale here. Anyway it's funny you mentioned about the Rick taking a back seat to the T-40. I turned a friend of mine from the Rickresource forum on to the Peavey basses and HE said he's been using the Peaveys more than the Ricks too!

Finally found a clean T-40 without frets. It's a defret, but OEM fretless T-40s seem pretty rare. There is neck dressing work to do and the body's down to naked wood, but I love to play this bass. The versatile T40 adjustments allow a nice setup following a defret, BTW. Doesn't look like this club is numbering anymore, but if somebody takes that on, I'm in!

Just picked one up used at GC. This thing is mint! Still has the original plastic that covered the pick guard when you buy them brand new! $400 and the case was included, also in perfect shape. My friend works there and the guy who traded it in was the original owner. Even the leather strips on the pickups look new! I'll post some pics once I pick it up after the police hold clears. This will be a long stinking 5 days!

Police hold? Are basses considered weapons in Nebraska? You have a waiting period?

With how beastly this thing is it should be considered a weapon. Apparently in NE (or maybe other towns idk) there is a waiting period of 5 days when used gear is sold. Its a legal thing in the instance that gear is stolen and reported. The 5 days allows the police time to work a report and an item can be found easier, also it protects the purchaser in the event it is stolen so they don't get it reprimanded. This is how it was explained to me. I haven't really purchased used gear from a store other than GC before but this is like the 5th time now that I have had to wait.

I might have made that confusing. the bass was sold to the store on 9/22, it cannot leave the store until 9/27 but can be purchased at any time. So I bought it on the 22nd, actually about an hour after it got there haha, and I can go pick it up on the 27th. So the waiting period only applies to 5 days after the store purchased it. I'm sure I could have made that a little better but I think I got the point across.

That's crazy. However, I've never had an instrument stole from me... so it may not be that crazy.

I found my T40 online at GC's website. It was in a store in Nebraska, I don't remember where. They shipped it to NJ for me. I have two "I'll never part with" basses. The T40 is one of them.

Same here...my black on black, rosewood T-40 is my favorite electric bass...that fact that you can still get them for $300-$400 blows my mind. A buddy of mine just found one exactly like mine in a pawn shop for $150 with the case!
