Peavey T-40 Club Part 2

I have a set of TI Powerbass on my T-40. They are a few years old but they sound so good that I don't feel the need to change them. Being rounds they have a fair amount of punch and clarity with a solid fundamental. As with all TI strings I've had the string to string balance is exceptional.

If you want the feel of flats, much less tension than Chromes, way more brightness and a sound that you’ll swear is round wounds... try EBMM Cobalt flats .040-.095. I have them on a J bass strung thru body. LaBella also makes sets that are designed for thru-body. I’d try their 760FX .039-.096 but they’ll not sound bright. They’re old school thumpy flats. And of course, the TI JF344 set is the king of all flats IMO, and works thru body.

You know, it's funny because a few years back Cobalt roundwounds are the reason I switched to Chrome flatwounds. I was sick of breaking strings, and that was my excuse to make the switch. Have you noticed any improvement in the longevity of Cobalts? I'm leaning towards DR Hi Beams, just because I wouldn't mind having an option with rounds on it. Overall, I'm really just trying to ascertain if certain strings play better with the T40 than not, and what length those strings should be.

I haven’t played the Cobalt flats enough to know if they’re prone to breaking. I’ve never played any other EBMM strings, so this set is my first.

I have played DR Hi Beams 45-105 and a set 45-65-85-120 (DADG) set on one of my T-40s. They work perfectly thru-body.

Thanks bro! Yeah that’s why I went w Chromes too. I must say though...now that they’ve broken in I’ve been thinking about putting rounds back on and letting them go dead. The pickups are a little darker than I originally thought and I may get some more dirt out of rounds. Def keep the strings that came on yours;) If you’re anything like me I sometimes go full circle when trying strings;)

Yeah, no plans on tossing those. I've had the same Chromes on my precision since about 2012, but prior to that I recall spending more than I'd like to admit while looking for the right strings. If these don't work out, I may try some Hi Beams. Or Cobalt flats. But we'll see what happens with the Chromes first.

I can’t help you much on the flat wound side of things but if you can handle the wait, my personal favorite strings are Kaliums, balanced tension hybrid strings specifically. I run my t-40 in D standard with a .118 low string and it produces my favorite tone of all my instruments.

Just be forewarned - these string are an excellent quality product which is sadly a bit controversial here due to their customer service, which is slow to say the least. Expect to wait probably a full month, but I really do think it’s hard to find a better string if you can wait.

EDIT: I have actually tried flats on my T-40 and while it’s doable, you do have to be a bit careful with them since the string-through bridge creates a fairly steep break angle. Tapewounds may potentially have the same issue.
