I have GHS Bass Boomers on mine, and while I haven't liked them on other basses they sound great on my '82.
I believe it has Boomers on it now. Nice tone, but I think I just prefer flats.
When I converted one of mine to 5 string I put La Bella Jamerson flats on it.
Neck handled the tension no problem. Put Status hot wire tapes on another while a 3rd got chromes, hated the chromes.
After the chromes I tried EB cobalt flats, hated those too

also this one... which didn’t make the cut!
I made it from various spare parts I had... Someone hacked the body up to make it lighter I guess... the funny thing is it’s still 11lb
the neck was off another bass I bought for parts, frets were badly torn out and the neck hacked down to a jazz bass width...
Refinished both and now I have my temporary fretless T40 until I find the real deal, T40FL

Nice one. If you fancy a tear drop bass and can't spring the cash for a Vox, use what's handy . Nought wrong with that

I am currently gluing together my first body blanks. My neighbor got a bunch of scrap wood at Home Depot and gave me some pieces. I’ll cut my teeth on scrap wood, make neck pocket templates, etc before I buy quality ash and cut on that.
I can see me making a lightweight T-40 body or two in the future. I’ll let you guys know when I do, and how they turn out. One goal, besides designing and building my own basses, will be an 8 pound T-40. It will be hard given the pickups weigh .9 pounds each. But, it’s a goal to shoot for.

Seeing this, it makes me wonder if anyone has ever taken a T-40 and cut the body down to a standard P-Bass shape and thickness.
Looking at them hanging on my wall, a T-40 does have more of a Yamaha BB body shape when compared to a P and a BB. But, I would say from experience that the T-40’s weight is a combination of heavy ash, 1 pound bridge, 1.8 pounds of pickups, 4 heavy (like lead!) knobs, neck plate that’s an absurd waste of pot metal, and heavy tuners. Reducing the weight of several of these contributors can quickly shed 2+ pounds off a bass.
Folks don't do it because the T-40 body is the wrong size and shape.
Just happen to have a T-40 body sans neck and a half dozen P-bass body templates.
The upper horn is shorter, thinner and the neck pocket access deeper. The lower horn can be shortened and the neck pocket access is nearly right. T-40's are thinner in the waist which throws off the flow of the curves to the horns.
Lastly,there's the bouts. Upper bout can be trimmed OK, lower bout eats into the jack socket area by 1/2". Also makes the knobs appear to be hugging the lower edge.
Bottom line. Just looks awful
