They come up in the classifieds in the $400-600 range with some consistency.

I wouldn’t doubt there’s still some in the $200 range on Craigslist somewhere in the world.

Yes there is only single T-40 bass found when I search Reverb for Peavey T-40 at a total of €1385 / $1688 including shipping, we don’t have Craigslist in Ireland unfortunately... I’d imagine you would have much better luck being in the US.

Doesn’t show up on my Reverb, maybe the seller only ships within the US. I suppose my location is what is making them so expensive whenever they do pop up due to supply / demand.

This bass here I have attached is even in Florida USA but still extremely over priced.

That's probably it...and you're right, most are overpriced.
I've seen several that have been so for years still popping up.

Wow, my T-40 FIVE @ 9.6 lb weighs less than your Foundation! I find the T-40 very comfortable to play sitting on a stool. That position makes it more comfortable to have my right hand toward the bridge PU where I like to pluck.

THAT is COOL! I passed on one recently that was under $400 because I just didn't need it. I don't play fours at all now, and while it's a classic, I just can't use it. Had a red one once and I liked that finish! A fiver would be sweet - that I could use!

I bought for 500 CAD and sold for 700 CAD but only after scoring a G&L L2500 Trib for 400 CAD. This is the bass you are looking for.

I was cruisin' the ebay highway a minute ago and checked up on the T-40 to see what the market was like for them, and I noticed a pretty substantial jump from just months ago. I searched them earlier this year and they were going for $300-$400, but this time I only saw one for less than $500, and it was an OBO listing (which always seems like desperation pricing to me). What's the deal? Anybody got any insight on the leap?

I skipped the T-40 and got myself a T-45, largely b/c I wanted a 1 PUP base (my main bass is a MM Sabre) and I liked the look. It's got fewer options tone-wise than the T-40 but is a beautiful instrument for the money (mine was under $500). I do own a T-60 guitar which I absolutely love - they're going up in price as well.

I think they flew under the radar for a long time as a screaming deal, and now people are catching on to what great basses they are.

and they’re not exactly rare but they are discontinued, so there’s that too.

i think someone worked out they were around the equivalent of US$1200 in today’s money when they were new. So not a cheap bass by any means!

Compared to other gear available they were cheap.

T-40's were priced around half the price of a Fender bass when released in the late 70's, prices stayed low all through the production years. When discontinued in 1988 the MSRP was still under $500.

Today T-40's fetch around 25% of a same year Fender.
