Peavey TNT 130 modification questions.

I just picked up an old Peavey TNT 130 for $75. I am pretty sure it has a black widow in it. But I won’t know for sure until this weekend.

The stock head has definitely seen its share of use. It works, but very scratchy. That’s fine for now. It’s a project for another day.

I bought this amp to bypass the internal head, for the time being, and run my TH350 through it.

My question is about the speaker wire gauge. Is 18g still fine to use for a 15” speaker? I’m not trying to do anything fancy. Just a straight single speaker setup.

Thanks,

Kenny

Yes, 18 ga. is fine.

Just be sure the combo's amp is isolated from the speaker when using the TH. I don't think a switching jack is a good idea if that is the plan to accomplish this.

Absolutely insure that there is no possibility that the TNT amp sees the output of the TH-350. Even with the unused amp switched off, catastrophic damage to both amps is possible.

Thank you all for the responses. Greatly appreciated.

basscooker and agedhorse,

So my plan was to wire the speaker to an 1/4" Neutrik Mono jack, so I could plug my TH350 directly into the speaker. I was also going to run the TNT amp to the same type of jack, so if I did want to use that amp, I could run a jumper cable from the TNT output to the speaker input. And set my TH350 on top of the cab. The TNT amp would not be plugged in, nor would it be connected to the speaker during this time.

Please see my diagram:

Am I understanding you correctly in that it won't work like I want it to? And it could damage both amps? How would I accomplish what I want to do?

They are still in line, damage will occur. :(
Even with an amp turned off you will still send power to the other amp. They must be completely separate from each other at all times.

Have the speaker go just to a jack on the back of the cab. Nothing else.

Now have the speaker line from the TNT head go outside of the cab, put a connector on it so it needs to be plugged in to this exterior speaker jack to work.

Now only one thing can be plugged into the speaker box at a time. This is the only safe way to do it.

Also recommend using a Speakon connector for this but with these low watt amps the phone plug will work.

Thanks for the response. Ok...So, maybe I'm not explaining it correctly, as I think what I want to do is what you've instructed me to do above. The only difference, is that I would be running a jumper cable from the internal amp to the speaker when I wanted to use it. Otherwise, the internal head would be disconnected from the speaker when I am using the TH350.

The picture makes it look like I have both connected at the same time, so I have updated my diagram to reflect the options separately:

He has it right, I think you misunderstood his drawing.

The two jacks with the words output and input and a line connecting them made me think he was still going to link the two jacks together. Like most cabs have a parallel in out on them.

One jack removes all abilities for a mistake.

I do like the idea of a single jack and running a cable from the internal head. I will look into doing that!

Yes, I just realized the diagram made it look like I would have both options connected at the same time. Please see updated diagram!

Ahh... external jumping. Its all good.

With the single jack external cable as in the pic I posted earlier you will have the head of that cable bouncing around if not plugged in while in transport, you first is nice and clean.

One more quick question - I can still place my TH350 on top of the amp when using it, right? I don't have to worry about either of the amps getting damaged doing that, right?

Smaller potential problem that could turn into disaster is your class amp is likely of the bridged output type. The other reason for speakons is you can't short the amp momentary like you can with phone plugs or ground out the amp on with the metal barrel and fry it.

The rubbish way to make it safe is wrap all the 1/4 barrels in tape. But you still have to never pull the lead with amp on, and be absolutely sure it's fully plugged in, or disaster.

Converting to speakons is a much better plan.

Ok. this is good to know. So don't use the 1/4" jacks, and use Speakons. Can I use the same setup I have in my diagram, but with Speakons?
