Peavey TNT 130 modification questions.

I did this with a friend's Peavey TKO amp (with a Scorpion Plus 15") over 30 years ago, and it still works fine to this day.

I used a dual mono switching 1/4" jack (from Radio Shack back in the day) so that both + and - are completely disconnected from the internal amplifier when using the combo as a speaker cabinet only.

A lot of switching jacks you will find only break the + connection. This isn't what you want. You want to completely eliminate any possibility of connection to the internal amplifier when another amplifier is connected to the speaker.

Speakon is not required in this application at the power levels we are discussing, but as pointed out above, can be safer in some instances; those don't really apply here, however.

Good to know! Thank you for the reply. I ordered the speakons, so I will just use those, as my head has a speakon as well

On my Eighties-era TNT 130, there was enough free space internally and obn the back panel of the amp chassis to install panel mount jacks. I put two output jacks there, and mounted another "speaker input" in the center of the "speaker enclosure" portion of the cabinet. Mine originally came with an 8-ohm speaker (non Black Widow). The amp only pushed 85W into 8 ohms. It took a 4 ohm load to get the full 130 watts out of it, so I stacked the combp on top of a single 8 ohm 15" cabinet. Sounded really good for what it was!

I bought one and gigged that heavy sucka all over NYC during the 80's to late 90's. Non Black Widow speaker but it was 4ohm and all of 130w. I got told to turn down all the time playing in a moderately loud band. Got sick of the weight and sold it during the mid 2000's.

So I have a question. The back of my TNT 130 head says 400 watts. But I see lower numbers thrown around a lot when talking about this head. Is the head really only 150w?

That is the power it sucks from the wall, not its speaker output.

When ever reading the numbers on an amp, the numbers buy the power cord are what it takes to run from the wall, look around for the speaker power rating. On this one it is left of the power cable, saying 130 watts at 4 ohms.

The input power mY be maximum power draw or any number less, down to the minimum 1/8-rated audio power which is the number used by the test labs and is the minimum allowed under the regulations.

Understanding what this number means will help with the understanding of the information it provides.

While it is not the Black Widow, it wasn't just a generic. Was a Scorpion which was a pretty good speaker. That combo was bulletproof. I bought mine around 1984 and it always worked and was loud for 130w. Speaker is still being made.

Mine actually doesn’t look like the scorpions I see online. I will pull it and take a pic.

I just searched the top number and I found a TB thread that identifies this speaker as a “70777052 Peavey 15 1967 Bass speaker Woofer 4 ohm”. I need to do more research on it though. I’m only on mobile right now.

Just found this on the Peavey forums:

“The 70777... is a Peavey part number, the 67-xxxx is an Eminence date code, and the 15454 is Peavey code for 15" 4 ohm 54 opince magnet. No other company would print those particular numbers on a speaker.”

Don’t know much else about it. Hopefully it sounds good with my TH350 head.
