Peavey Tube Head CHEAP in La Mesa

Well...my GC got my VB-2 in yesterday from Memphis and it didn't work! It was shipped double boxed and everything looked great from the outside...opened it up and the unit looked brand new (not on the floor condition) except it was missing the jewel light. Plugged her up and nothing! Arggg...checked everything including different speaker cables, different cabinets, tested another head and it worked through the cables and cabinets, so I was upset. GC will be ordering me another VB-2 on Friday and hopefully we'll be able to find a NIB.

By the way...I used to work at my GC and I'm in good with all the managers...so I had the store manager look up VB-2s in the system and there are 38 left across the chain. 38...so if you still want one then keep asking because they are there. Of course no one in my store knew about the price so everyone was pretty shocked.

Happy New Years!

I'm curious - does the amp power up? I mean does the light come on but no sound?

FWIW, and admittedly based solely on anecdotal accounts, there sure seems to be a fairly high failure rate on these. My $.02.

The amp powers up just fine. All tubes light up with a slight glow and all in the same fashion. All preamp tubes were seated correctly and the fuse was checked and it hadn't blown. I'm serious...I checked everything. I spent one hour fiddling with it and left pissed simply because I wanted to hear the sounds of the VB-2.

On a surprising note...I was happy to see that Peavey uses J/J tubes in the VB-2. A nice surprise when you are used to buying something new with Ruby, GT, or relabeled Chinese tubes. J/Js are awesome.

Sounds very familiar.

I recently sold my VB-2. I had no issues with it.

My band has a loud drummer and guitarists, and some of our gigs are in bass trap venues. I found I was pushing it harder and harder with one 1x15 cab and didn't have the headroom to cut through on some songs. With my SS heads, I have no problem hearing myself with just a 1x15 cab in most clubs.

Would have been just fine playing with sensitive musicians (or more speakers).

The one I have in my possession right now works and has plenty of power, but the tonal range seems to be severely limited- especially the bass control, which hardly changes at all from completely off to wide open!!! As I noted before, the bright switch doesn't seem to do much either. I'm finding my V4BH to be WAY more responsive and just as loud through the same 1x15". This can't be right- so it's going back to MF. I have another on the way from GC for $399 so if this one too is a dud, I give up. Pretty disappointing, it is a beautiful amp and I really want to like it, but....... it needs to work right or I am keeping my money. FIN.

I spent an hour today putting the VB-2 through its paces (into a Berg HT322) and I was quite pleased with the range of controls available. There is a definite character underlying the amp's tone but I was surprised how 'modern' a tone I could pull out of this head.
My Eden head took a dump last night so I'll be pressing the VB-2 into service this weekend (into two Berg HT112 cabs); I'm looking forward to wringing it out at another gig.

Well, back in sunny(?) San Diego.... and it is so foggy I can't see across the street! I was in *beautiful* (COUGH, COUGH, COUGH) Hickory, NC, hating the last 10 days.

Munji- glad you picked it up... I need more gear like I need another hole in my head... did I mention I was thinking of ...

How did you develop your statistics? What percentage of them have had problems?

From early in the thread, Post #25 by BbbyBld of Peavey, this seems to be the issue with some of the VB-2 out in stores. I don't know why Pedro didn't at least mention this but only his anecdotal bit.

That seems like what the problem was with the VB-2 that came in for me...except I changed out the tube with another one they had on hand (same value). Still didn't work. Oh well...my second go at the VB-2 is being ordered today.

I don't recall when was the Vb first issued? I bought mine in September of this year and wonder whether these were part of the first 100 mentioned in the post referenced.
