Pedal suggestion for solo

Hi guyz and gals, this is one of this "what pedal do I need for metal" thread with a twist.

I play in a metal band (how original!) in a 2 basses (oh surprise!) band with no guitar at all (how good is that!?!). We play a mix of Trash/Death/Core.

My pedals chain is the following: Tuner - Hi pass filter - Keeley Bassit Compressor - Alpha Omicron - B7K Ultra.

I use the B7K is my base tone, not so clean but not full on distortion either. I use the A/O when I need to solo but I am not sure I get the sound I want. First of all it can get really noisy and second, it doesn't punch as much as I want.

Do you have any suggestion? I am wondering if a POG could be the ticket.

Thanks for your help!

EHX offers the POG, HOG and several other pitch shifters to check out but there are certainly others you should check out as well.

TC Electronics has the Sub n Up in a full size and mini version and there are a number of tone prints that are easily loadable that you might find useful. I personally find the Sub n Up more pleasing sounding and the TonePrints a real plus.

T Rex Quint is also worth checking out as it does octave down, up and adds a fifth up as well.

I play the POG mini on guitar but I never heard about the Quint! Thanks for the sugestion!

So are you looking for more dirt pedals to help you punch through a little more??

If you're looking for a dirt pedal that loses no low end at all, in fact adds a ton of body and punch, look no further than the DG X7 or the Damnation Audio MBD1. Both are completely different. But both have TONS of low end punch with great definition and cut/clarity. I use the MBD as an OD and the X7 as a dist. The way I set my X7 it straight cuts the mix in half. If I want to be heard, that's the pedal I use. Then if I really want some hair, I stack these together. It's filthy bass bliss man :D

If it's something else that you're looking for, like maybe a clean blend, get a Damnation Loop/Blender. That pedal is so simple yet amazing IMO. adds a low passed clean blend to your signal and as well as adding one to any pedals you put in it's loop.

No if you're looking for an octave in a band like you're describing, I would most def add either the POG2 or a BWhammy. The BWhammy if you're just looking for an octave up with pitch shifting capabilities and the POG if you need some more octave abilities at the same time. The POG2 can do more at once. The BWham can really only do one thing at once. Which isn't bad. And they both track wonderfully with chords. And they both sound awesome with dist and fuzzes. There's nothing like a poly octave up into a good fuzz or dist. I would stay away from mono octaves like the OC2 and such. They don't track well in the lower registers and will just muddy everything up.

Keeps your original tone and you boost it as desired. BB and RC also give 2 band EQ.

Actually, That’s not quite true. It doesnt change you tone radically, but is does put some kind of halo on it which is why I like it. I find it difficult to describe. Best to try them.

If you’re looking to just have more of your basic tone then the RC or EP migt work. If you want dirt then the BB might be worth a look.

Why not a fuzz? For soloing maybe a brassmaster based fuzz could do the work because it's more mid oriented. And maybe you could also add a delay or some modulation to make it more interesting.
The POG basically adds an octave up and down (I find that the octave up works better for solloing than the octave down), it will probably get you more into the guitar zone and I don't know if that's what you want to do.
One pedal that I think works great for soloing is the Source Audio Multiwave Bass Distortion that makes a sort of enveloping fuzz with hints of octave up that sounds super synthy and diferent.
Also the EHX Sovtek Deluxe is a great option specially if you use it with an expression pedal for some wah fuzz Cliff Burton style.
I guess it's best to try with diferent pedals to see how it works.

PS: I've just realized that you play in a 2 basses band with no guitars. Then maybe the POG or the Sun n' Up are a good choice for that since you don't have a guitar to get in the way.

IME, for a solo to punch through it needs full dynamic range. Any level of fuzz, dirt, drive etc. will, by design, have reduced dynamics compared to a clean tone with headroom. Have you considered substituting the dirt with a clean boost with a little boost in the upper mids?

I never tought about that!
Maybe another layer of dirt isn't whwt I need. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll investigate that.
