Pedal suggestions please.

like...dude...i know what i want. i want a good chorus and i want a good compression and eq pedal, or anything that will really fatten my tone. i know what i dont want too. i dont want a flanger, or overdrive, or distortion or anything that i personally will not sure.

yes i know there is a search function, but its hard to search stuff you dont know anything about. i just wanted some honest suggestions as to a cheap, but still good choices for pedals.

im not saying im hating you messing with me anything, im sure you know a lot and can help me, so just do it. im not a noob bassist, ive been playing for a while and listen to tons of good musicians with great sounding basses. yes i know jaco uses a pre cbs 62 fretless fender jazz, only using the bridge pickup. i know all that stuff, i read his 300+ page biography and read anything i can on all of my favorite musicians. its just hard sometimes to figure out what can make my tone more like theirs without blowing 1000's of dollars on an old acoustic 360 amp. or 10,000 on a custom conklin like Baudin.

i just want some help, i dont know much about pedals. i always try to help if i know an answer, so please help me if you do.

Since they're still busy poking at you, I'll help you out.

For EQ pedals, my personal experience has been that the best general-purpose ones out there are the Boss GEB-7 and the MXR 6-band (or MXR 10-band, if you really need the flexibility) EQ. On a budget, I'd go for the GEB-7, as it has useful level adjustments for overall volume boosting.

For chorus pedals... this is a really tricky one. This is something you'd have to go out there and try. Some are bright and shimmery, others are lush and deep, and plenty can pull off both, but with their own signature voicing. I'd start by trying out an EHX Small Clone or Stereo Clone Theory, and compare it to a Boss CE-5 (Chorus Ensemble) or CEB-3 (Bass Chorus). Once you've had a chance to hear those, it'll be easy to figure out just what you want out of your chorus, as the Small Clone and Chorus Ensemble represent the most famous variations of chorus out there. And you may actually like one enough to take it home!

If those don't satisfy, you could look into the more expensive and boutique chorus pedals.

As for compression... there are two basic kinds - the types that fatten your tone without really changing your tone much (the "transparent" or "studio" kind), and the types that "squish" your sound and really make it sound like something else. I'd opt for a more transparent compressor. The Demeter Compulator is a simple but top-quality compressor, but it's pretty expensive. On a budget, consider looking at the BBE Opto Stomp and Aphex Punch Factory instead, as they're both very good for that sort of compression.

Good luck with your search! And be sure to search TB for more info on those specific pedals I mentioned, if you have more questions!

OK, fair enough. But I still say in order to get a good answer, you have to ask the right questions. And in order to ask the right questions, you have to learn a bit about the subject from what there is already out there to read. So you know the names of of what you want, that means you are able to do some research.

For example, if you search on "Jaco" you'll learn that he used no effects (other than possibly some fuzz from his 360). So there are no fx to help you sound like him; but there is a guy who custom-makes clones of the 360 preamp, in pedal form, for only a few hundred.

If you search on "fatten" you'll learn a lot there too, as people are always asking about pedals to fatten their tone, and you'll see lots of different ways to do it and lots of pro/con commentary on various pedals.

If you search on "chorus", you'll (a) be able to make a list of ones you should check out, because there are many out there, and (b) be able to narrow the list down by figuring out which ones are within your budget. So then you're in prime shape to ask "Which is better for funky fingerstyle jazz, with the rig I'm using: the ABC pedal or the XYZ pedal"? That's an educated question, and one we can actually help you with.

Good luck!

both posts taken well, thank you guys. btw bongo, while i am interested in the 360 preamp, the real sound came from the cab. it was an 18 inch woofer, backwards so it resonated through the cab and than bounced back out through the front. This made the sound go in all directions. While a preamp may make my tone sound like that, it can not replicate it as well as i wish.

Wish i could find one of those cabs, or someone else who makes them like that...or knew how to make my own! lol

but thank you a lot guys, i wrote down all the names and plan to head to the music store tomorrow to try them all out.

Hey man, I meant no disrespect. I wasn't trying to be malicious or anything. By the time I posted about 15 flangers, I wasn't even poking at you about the search function, contrary to popular belief. Many people had already made good suggestions (and already mentioned searching), so in the spirit of being excessively ridiculous at all times, I was jokingly trying to suggest 16 flangers. I know that no one on earth could have a use for 16 flangers. I love flange, but 15 flangers makes about as much sense as... me. I was just enjoying pushing useless pedals. ;-D

That being said, there are quite a few threads just like yours - hence the "beatin' gloves". Even going through the first couple of pages, you'll find a few threads with similar titles/questions. ;-D I'm not sure why you took such offense to me suggesting lots of silly flange pedals, but I wasn't serious and did not intend to cause any harm. While I admittedly may be crazy, I always try to be respectful.

I never thought you were a "noob" bassist or questioned your tastes in music.

... But I still say go with the flangers :ninja:

There are 18" cabs sold today, but for an inside-out cab, you may have to DIY. While it sounds easy enough, I hear it's quite time consuming, but that would definitely be a cool thing to try.

Those things are beyond overkill for modern applications (i.e. gigs with PA). I suggest you actually try a 360/361 setup before you lionize it. It's ridiculously loud and it excels at projecting your sound about 30 ft away from the amp. Which makes it tricky to have a volume that is exceptable to your ears that isn't cutting the heads off the people in the 5th row.

Unless you absolutely love the amps sound, I wouldn't bother to pine for one. Also that amp doesn't sound like that middy-Jaco wimpiness without major tweaking.

lah spanky it WAS funnier the second time, lmao.

Yeah the jaco amp probably isnt the best idea for me, but i would pick one up if i saw it laying around. I currently just have a 300 watt 1x15 fender combo.

its a BXR 300C

Its nice for the price, has a great tone, especially for the price! its built like a tank too...from 1991.

check it - [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

thats the only decent pic i can find on the web.

well anyways, thats my amp, my bass is a Peavey Cirrus.

thanks for the help dudes.
