Hey guys/gals...I picked up an amaaaaazing MVP 4 from @rickr (amazing TB'er BTW)... I was kind of surprised about a couple things on the bass - how small the body seemed too be...and how thick and rich the Bartolini sound was - (comparing to some pretty awesome gear).
So, this lead me to thinking....my MTD that I had (and foolishly let go for peanuts) also had the Bartolini's in it and, again, I was enamored by its rich sexy-a$$ tone.

Fast-forward a couple weeks ago, and I found a Thunderbass locally and I truly didn't expect it to be as great as my MVP....but.... it is great in its OWN way! - I would say my MVP is gunna be hard to knock down off the Podium..but man, this Thunderbass is a beast.
I was chatting with my buddy Russ and he had mentioned that Bartolini made specialized pickups for Pedulla and MTD - and they are different then the ones you can purchase direct.
Does anyone know the comparable Barts for a PJ (MVP) and the HB style (Thunderbass)..are there any?
Do normal Barts sound totally different? I'm sure I can sit and youtube for 4 hours, but having proper 'seat time' with real ears/feel, would be awesome info.

Thinking of thinning my herd of awesome-ness down a wee bit (not the ones in the picture), and fine tuning the range to please my ears and not just hording them for wall art.
(I would love a trans black MVP 4 or something like that.... killer trade bait coming soon) ;)

Custom is a word applied to all Bart pickups. Quite successfully too.

Barts have been described as all being too dark and all being too bright. Each type comes in multiple variations that look identical. Basically I ignore all "advice" that suggests a company has a singular sound. I have basses with Bart's and no one can identify which ones they are by listening. Including the ones on my Tobias'.

If you want barts choose the models that are wound for the sound you want.

Thanks. Yeah maybe I am mistaking rich deep low mids as other call 'dark'. I like it! I find they react soooo nice with a light overdrive as well. Cheers.

Bartolini's are indeed top tier pickups. It's true that the ones used by Pedulla and Tobias are a little different, both from each other and from the standard ones. The preamps are different too. Bartolini won't sell you those specs out of respect for the luthiers. But, the normal Barts are still GREAT sounding pickups, and the NTMB pre is second to none imo. They're not so different from the custom ones that you wouldn't like them.

Thanks for the information. Appreciate that. Hopefully I come across an MTD 434 or another MVP 4 :)
